WSCR: Race for Conference Supremacy Heats Up

Purdue surged back to the top of the Big Ten standings with 11 points after earning a 1-0 victory over Michigan on Thursday evening. The No. 18-ranked Boilermakers were fifth entering the game, but catapulted ahead of Minnesota and Wisconsin, who are now tied for second place in the conference race with 10 points apiece. Rounding out the top five teams with nine points are Ohio State and Penn State, each owning 3-1-0 ledgers against conference opponents. The Buckeyes and Nittany Lions will have their opportunity to make headway in the Big Ten leaderboard this weekend as they prepare for a Midwest road swing against second-place foes.

Minnesota will look to reclaim the lead this weekend as they welcome the Nittany Lions and the No. 19-ranked Buckeyes to Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium on Friday and Sunday, respectively. The Maroon and Gold have not lost at home in 19 straight matches dating back to the 2007 season, but Penn State holds a 15-3 advantage over Minnesota all-time, out-scoring the Gophers, 43-17 overall.

Meanwhile in Madison, Wis., the Badgers are looking to score their first conference home-wins of the season. The Cardinal and White will face tough competition as they play host to a red-hot Ohio State team at 8 p.m. (ET) on Friday. The Buckeyes have won nine of its last 10 contests, but trail the all-time series with Wisconsin, 7-8-3, splitting the last four matchups. On Sunday, Penn State will greet the upstart Badger squad that has won three of its last four as the conference race continues to heat up.

In other conference action, Illinois will travel to Iowa on Saturday, with kickoff scheduled for 8 p.m. (ET). Both teams will be in the hunt for their first Big Ten win of the season.

Also on Sunday, Michigan State visits Northwestern and Michigan welcomes No. 22 Indiana to Ann Arbor, in a game to be televised on tape delay by the Big Ten Network. Both conference matchups are slated for 2 p.m. (ET).
