What you need to know for the weekend

1. All of the Big Ten coaching staffs competing this weekend will wear sneakers with their suits to demonstrate their support of the American Cancer Society's cause to kick cancer.

Coaches vs. Cancer participants have raised more than $55 million since 1993 to help the Society fund ground-breaking cancer research, provide up-to-date cancer information and education, advocate for public health policies that benefit communities, and deliver services that improve the quality of life for patients and their families.

  If you have not watched an episode of the Big Ten Network's The Journery 2010, you're missing out. Tune in on Saturday at 9:30 p.m. ET (immediately following the Northwestern at Michigan State game). The show offers a behind-the-scenes, documentary-style look at the most intriguing storylines across the Big Ten Conference. This week's episode features behind the scenes of Tuesday's nail-biter between Michigan-Michigan State. Also featured: Tubby Smith and the Golden Gophers, Wisconsin's Jordan Taylor,  Illinois' Jeff Jordan and Northwestern's Juice Thompson.

3. 50 years ago. 25 teams. Single elimination bracket. One winner. On Sunday, Jan. 31, Ohio State will honor the 1960 National Championship Buckeyes during a special halftime presentation. Ohio State, coached by Fred Taylor, won the national title with a 75-55 victory in the final game over California, coached by Pete Newell. Jerry Lucas of Ohio State was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

4.  Only 41 days until the 2010 Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament tips off. Will you be there? Big Ten Basketball Fans - March Is On! 5.  In light of the Wildcats meeting the Spartans at Breslin this weekend, you need to know that Michigan State is is 94-2 in its last 96 home games against unranked visitors. The Spartans had won 80 straight games against unranked teams at the Breslin Center before Northwestern's 70-63 win there on Jan. 21, 2009.
