More than 1,300 runners took to the streets outside Conseco Fieldhouse this morning for the second annual Big Ten Hoops Day 5K. Despite chilly temperatures near 40 degrees, runners began and finished the 3.1-mile race outside the main entrance of Conseco Fieldhouse.
Several volunteers were on hand to cheer the participants and the Minnesota pep band was stationed on the course to give the runners some tunes along the way.
The Indiana Sports Corporation, which touts health and wellness in the Indianapolis community as one if its primary objectives, was pleased with today's turnout, which ISC spokesperson John Dedman said was nearly 500 more than last year's total.
Two things seem to make this event one of a kind. The first being that all participants are encouraged to wear clothes from their favorite Big Ten school. How often do you see people running in Purdue football jerseys or Michigan and Ohio State fans crossing the finish line in unison?
The second thing that adds a unique touch to the event is the inclusion of the Indianapolis youth. Throughout the year, students were encouraged to run a full 26.2-mile marathon by running half a mile over 50 days. Today, the 51st day, 100 kids finish their marathon by running 1.2 miles around downtown.
