MBB: Maize Rage Still Ragin'

MaizeRage1.JPGIf you are looking to present an award to a group of guys who have gone above and beyond the call of duty, look no further than the Conseco Fieldhouse balcony, Section 215, Rows 1 & 2.

That is where you will find the Michigan "Maize Rage" student section that has taken advantage of the Big Ten Tournament's special student pricing this year and has brought a little Wolverine flavor to each contest this week.

This year the Big Ten made a student all-session ticket package available for just $50, which as Maize Rage president Nick Mattar points out is, "a great deal."

Mattar said his Maize Rage group began the Big Ten Tournament with 40 members and as of the first half of the Minnesota/Purdue semifinal, the group is still 20 strong.

MaizeRageShot.jpgThe Maize Rage was present for Michigan's first-round win over Iowa on Thursday and suffered the heartbreaking loss with all Wolverines on Friday when Ohio State's Evan Turner made an improbable 37-footer at the buzzer for the win.

Despite the loss, Mattar said the group stuck around to cheer on in-state rival Michigan State, but after the Spartans were upset by Minnesota Friday night, the Maize Rage is now seeing Maize gold in the Golden Gophers.

"Minnesota is our team now," said Mattar.

So far the extra support is working.  Minnesota has stormed out of the gates and have shocked the Boilermakers with a 37-11 advantage at halftime.

Mattar and his group are planning on sticking around as well.

"The Big Ten Tournament website had great lodging deals so we just got a few rooms, crammed four people in each one, and it worked out to $60 per night over four nights."

And although the balcony seats are a little uncommon for the popular student section that is used to hovering the sidelines at Crisler Arena, Mattar knows the seats go with the price.

"The view could be a little better," Mattar said, "but we're only paying five bucks a game."
