JoletteLaw.JPGThe first day of action is in the books at the 2010 Big Ten Women's Basketball Tournament.

And what a way to end the first day with an incredible performance by Illinois senior Jenna Smith.  En route to a 59-53 victory over Indiana, the Fighting Illini was led by Smith's game-high 23 points and four blocks.  Oh by the way she also has a Big Ten Tournament record 19 rebounds!

Fellow senior Lacey Simpson contributed by filling up the stat sheet with 12 points, eight steals, seven rebounds and six assists.

Also amazing.

But the night belonged to Smith and the performance she had on the boards.  Despite battling with a nagging sore knee and a tight left hamstring throughout the game, Smith managed to haul in 19 rebounds, which still left her one shy of her personal best.  Smith's career rebounding high is 20, which she tallied against the Hoosiers on Feb. 7 earlier this season.  The previous conference tournament record was 18, set by Penn State's Amanda Brown against the Illini in 2007.

When asked in the postgame press conference about the performance of one of her senior leaders, Illinois head coach Jolette Law said this about Smith:

"I have utmost respect for Jenna Smith.  I think she's one of the top players in the country.  Everything I've asked of Jenna Smith, she has responded, and I'm so thankful.  I'm thankful that I had the opportunity to coach her."
