Michigan State scored five runs with two outs in the fifth inning to take the series finale from Purdue on Monday. Ryan Jones led the Spartans with two hits, a run scored and a pair of stolen bases. Tony Bucciferro earned the win, allowing two earned runs on nine hits and two walks with three strikeouts in seven innings. Kurtis Frymier picked up the save with two scoreless, hitless innings. Drew Wurdack was tagged with the loss. Eric Charles and Nick Overmyer led the Boilermakers with two hits and one run scored each. Charles also swiped two bases.
TOURNAMENT IMPLICATIONS: Michigan State's win on Monday dropped Purdue into a four-way tie for first place in the Big Ten. The Boilermakers are knotted with Michigan, Minnesota and Northwestern, all at 10-8. The Spartans jumped into a four-way tie for seventh at 8-10, tied with Illinois, Iowa and Penn State, just two games back of the leaders. Indiana and Ohio State are tied for fifth at 9-9.
