The Football Bowl Association announced today that it is launching a nationwide, online advertising campaign entitled "America's Bowl Tradition - It's Worth Keeping." The online campaign begins tonight and will highlight America's multi-day bowl celebrations and is timed to coincide with Selection Sunday and the beginning of bowl season. The ads focus on the importance of the bowl tradition in America and the they point out that for seventy schools, bowl week is a popular and successful multi-day celebration. For players, a bowl game is often the highlight of their football playing careers. The ads also make the case that under a playoff, the bowls will fade away.
"We're delighted to showcase the 35 bowl games as an American tradition worth keeping, said Tina Kunzer-Murphy, Executive Director of the Football Bowl Association. "Student-athletes agree - ESPN's survey of college football players showed that 77% of the student-athletes prefer a career with three bowls, and only 23% prefer a career with one playoff trip," said Kunzer-Murphy.
The ads not only highlight the excitement enjoyed by 70 teams and their fans from coast-to-coast, but also the multi-day community celebrations, which can include visits by teams to military bases, hospitals and civil rights museums. The ads highlight the viewpoints of players whose voices are often left out of the debate over the creation of a playoff.
One ad states: "But if a playoff were created, dozens of schools and millions of fans would be left out of America's post-season tradition. For these non-playoff schools, their bowls will fade away. For the few schools that make a playoff, gone are the events that make the bowls an American tradition. Instead of a multi-day celebration, a playoff means arriving the day before the game and leaving right after."
