Michael Phelps (USA, Michigan) earned the 17th gold medal of his career and 21st overall, placing first in the 100 butterfly in London. Phelps clocked a time of 51.21 to stand atop the podium for the third time in the 2012 Games. Phelps has now captured three golds and two silvers at the London Games.

The Canadian women's soccer team, featuring Emily Zurrer (Illinois), Karina Leblanc (Nebraska), Brittany Timko (Nebraska), Erin McLeod (Penn State), Carmelina Moscato (Penn State) and Lauren Sesselmann (Purdue), defeated host Great Britain 2-0 to advance to the semifinals.
