Illinois' DiBernardo Named US Athlete of the Year Finalist

Illinois women's soccer standout Vanessa DiBernardo was named one of five finalists for U.S. Soccer's 2012 Young Female Athlete of the Year Award, it was announced on Monday. The award is one of the most prestigious awards in the sport, as the young athlete honor dates back to 1998. DiBernardo was a strong and essential force in the center midfield for the gold-medal winning U-20 U.S. Women's National Team and is a three-time first-team All-Big Ten selection for the Illini.

Fifty percent of the award is determined by online votes, while the other half is determined by national media and U.S. representatives. The winner will be announced Monday, Dec. 3.
