Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Season in Review

The Big Ten recorded 10 top five finishes on the final day of the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, highlighted by Indiana's Derek Drouin taking home his third indoor high jump title and Michigan's women's DMR title. Drouin's mark of 2.35 meters set a new Canadian national record and is the second-best ever by a collegian, while the Wolverines' team of Rebecca Addison, Maya Long, Jillian Smith and Amanda Eccleston took home the crown. The Wisconsin men earned a spot on the podium with a third-place team finish, while the Illinois women placed 14th.

Three Big Ten student-athletes placed in the top five in the weight throw, led by a runner-up finish from Michigan State's Antonio James (22.25). Purdue's Chukwuebuka Enekwechi posted a mark of 21.52 to earn third place, while Minnesota's Jon Lehman finished third with a throw of 21.35. In the 800-meter run, Penn State's Casimir Loxsom (1:47.23) and Minnesota's Harun Abda (1:48.24) finished second and fifth, respectively, while Illinois' Samantha Murphy (2:03.95) finished fourth on the women's side. In the womeIn the men's DMR, three Big Ten teams placed in the top four, led by a second-place finish by Penn State. Minnesota and Indiana crossed the line in third and fourth, respectively. The Big Ten also posted two top-five times in the mile, led by third-place Austin Mudd of Wisconsin (3:57.93). Minnesota's John Simons finished fifth with a time of 3:59.71.

All-Americans: Eighty-two Big Ten student-athletes earned USTFCCCA All-America honors following their performance at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. For the complete list, click HERE.

Big Ten Individual Honors: The Big Ten Conference office announced on Wednesday, Feb. 27., the 2013 Big Ten men's and women's indoor track and field individual award winners.On the men's side, Penn State senior Casimir Loxsom was named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Year and Track Athlete of the Championships, while Indiana senior Derek Drouin was tabbed Big Ten Field Athlete of the Year and Field Athlete of the Championships. Penn State's Brannon Kidder was named Freshman of the Year by the conference coaches, while Wisconsin head coach Ed Nuttycombe was tabbed Coach of the Year by his peers. On the women's side, Illinois sophomore Ashley Spencer was named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Year and Michigan State senior Beth Rohl earned the nod as Field Athlete of the Year. In addition, Spencer was tabbed Big Ten Track Athlete of the Championships, while Nebraska's Mara Griva took home Field Athlete of the Championships laurels. Illinois' Morolake Akinosun was tabbed Freshman of the Year by the conference coaches, while Fighting Illini head coach Tonja Buford-Bailey was named Coach of the Year by her peers. Wisconsin Men Claim Big Ten Title: The Wisconsin men took home the 2013 Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championships title at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. Three individual champions and five second-place finishes led Wisconsin to its 23rd overall Big Ten indoor title and first since 2008. For the complete release, click HERE.

Illinois Women Take Home Big Ten Crown: The Illinois women won the 2013 Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
