2012-13 Women's Tennis Season in Review

Wonderful Weatherholt: Nebraska's Mary Weatherholt closed her career as the 2013 NCAA Singles runner-up on Monday, May 27, at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex in Urbana, Ill. The senior finished her last season with a combined 52-5 singles and doubles record, including 30-2 in singles play. Teams in the Tournament: Indiana, Michigan, Nebraska, Northwestern and Purdue represented the Big Ten at the NCAA Championship, marking the third time in the last four years the conference boasted at least five teams in the tournament. ITA Recognition: Nebraska's Mary Weatherholt earned the ITA/Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship, it was announced on Tuesday, May 21. The prestigious national award was presented to the senior in Urbana, Ill., in conjunction with the NCAA Championships. Click here for more on the award.

Tournament Titans: Third-seeded Northwestern took home the Big Ten Women's Tennis Tournament crown with a 4-1 victory over top-seeded Michigan on Sunday, April 28. The title was the Wildcats' 14th in the last 15 conference postseason events and gave them the Big Ten's automatic berth to the NCAA Championships. Northwestern jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with victories in the No. 2 and 3 doubles position. The Wolverines knotted the score at 1-1 with a victory in the No. 1 singles slot. The Wildcats responded with three-straight victories in the No. 2, 4 and 6 singles positions to clinch the match. For more on the Big Ten Tournament, click here.

Sharing the Crown:
Michigan and Nebraska clinched a share of the Big Ten Women's Tennis Championship on Sunday, April 21. The wolverines earned their fifth Big Ten crown, while the Huskers claimed their first conference title. For more on the regular-season champions, click here.

Awards Galore: The Big Ten announced its women's tennis All-Conference teams and individual award winners at the conference tournament banquet on Thursday, April 25. Nebraska's Mary Weatherholt was named Athlete of the Year, while Michigan's Ronit Yurovsky took home Freshman of the Year honors and the Wolverines' Ronni Bernstein was tabbed Coach of the Year.
