Michigan State defensive lineman Shilique Calhoun was named the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week, the Football Writers Association of American announced Tuesday afternoon. Calhoun accounted for two defensive scores in the Spartans' 21-6 victory over South Florida last weekend. He returned a fumble four yards for a touchdown in the second quarter before returning an interception 56 yards for a touchdown in the third. He now has three defensive scores this season, having also returned a fumble for a touchdown in Michigan State's opening weekend win over Western Michigan, becoming the first Spartan player since 1999 to record three defensive scores in a season. It marks the second straight week a Big Ten player has won the FWAA honor as Northwestern's Collin Ellis earned the distinction following Week 1.
