Three Big Ten student-athletes were tabbed as semifinalists for the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards.
Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon was named a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award, given annually to the nation's top player. Gordon leads the Big Ten with 144.6 rushing yards per game and is tied for the conference lead with 11 touchdowns. Twenty players from current Big Ten schools have won the Maxwell Award.
A pair of Big Ten linebackers in Ohio State's Ryan Shazier and Wisconsin's Chris Borland were named semifinalists for the Bednarik Award, honoring the nation's outstanding defensive player. Shazier and Borland were also named semifinalists for the Butkus Award, given to the nation's top linebacker, earlier this week. Both players currently lead their team in tackles, with Shazier ranking sixth in the Big Ten with 8.2 stops per game and Borland tied for seventh in the conference with 8.1 tackles per outing. Shazier is also tied for third in the Big Ten with 9.0 tackles for loss. Eight defenders from current Big Ten schools have won the Bednarik Award.
