Four Big Ten Standouts Named Finalists for USA Softball Player of the Year

The Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America and USA Softball announced the Top 25 Finalists for the 2014 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year on Wednesday, with four Big Ten players garnering recognition.

Michigan's Sierra Romero and Haylie Wagner and Minnesota's Sara Moulton and Kaitlyn Richardson were named Player of the Year finalists. The Wolverines and Gophers are currently the top two teams in the Big Ten standings.

Romero is the reigning Big Ten Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year. She currently leads the conference in batting average (.505), on-base percentage (.637), slugging percentage (.882), RBI (42), walks (37) and runs scored (45). Wagner was a second-team All-Big Ten pitcher last season. She leads the Big Ten in earned-run-average (0.94) and fewest runs allowed (19) and has twice been named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week this season.

Moulton was a unanimous first-team All-Big Ten honoree last season. She currently paces the Big Ten in wins (19), strikeouts (181) and opponents' batting average (.166). Moulton has been tabbed the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week three times this season. Richardson also collected unanimous first-team All-Big Ten plaudits in 2013. She ranks second in the Big Ten in batting average (.463), on-base percentage (.587), slugging percentage (.882), RBI (37) and walks (29).

Just prior to the start of post-season play, on May 7 the list will be narrowed to the Top 10 Finalists. The Top 3 Finalists will be announced May 21, while the winner of the 2014 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award will be revealed on May 27 prior to the start of the NCAA WCWS in Oklahoma City.
