Minnesota's Bernie Bierman (1916, Football)
Bierman was named Minnesota's Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient in 1916, the second year of the award. As a player, Bierman was an All-Conference and All-America halfback for the Gophers, leading the team to the 1915 Big Ten Championship. After serving in World War I, he began his collegiate coaching career at Montana before eventually returning to Minnesota in 1932. In his first 10 years, he led the Gophers to seven Big Ten Championships and five national championships. He returned to the military to serve three years in World War II before coaching six more years for the Gophers. In 16 seasons at Minnesota, he finished with a record of 93-35-6.
