Big Ten Reels in AVCA Regional Awards

Big Ten volleyball standouts collected numerous AVCA Division I Regional Awards on Tuesday, with 14 players earning All-Region honors. Penn State head coach Russ Rose was named the Mideast Region Coach of the Year, while Penn State newcomer Megan Courtney reeled in Mideast Region Freshman of the Year laurels. Earning All-Mideast Region accolades were Michigan's Jennifer Cross, Michigan State's Lauren Wicinski, Minnesota's Tori Dixon and Katherine Harms, Nebraska's Lauren Cook, Gina Mancuso and Hannah Werth, Northwestern's Stephanie Holthus, Ohio State's Mari Hole, Penn State's Micha Hancock, Deja McClendon, Ariel Scott and Katie Slay and Purdue's Ariel Turner. Additionally, six players received Honorable Mention status -- Michigan's Lexi Erwin, Michigan State's Kori Moster, Minnesota's Ashley Wittman, Nebraska's Meghan Haggerty, Ohio State's Emily Danks and Penn State's Courtney.

Minnesota's Taylor Uhl and Ohio State's Tiffany Cameron, both first-team All-Big Ten selections and All-America honorees, led the nation in total goals scored this season, each tallying 21 scores. Uhl also led the country in total points (51) and was second in points per game (2.55) and goals per game (1.05), while Cameron was first in game-winning goals (9), third in goals per game (0.955) and fourth in total points (47).

Michigan's Haley Kopmeyer, the Big Ten's Goalkeeper of the Year, ranked fourth in the nation in goalie minutes played (2246.41). As a team, Big Ten Champion and NCAA runner-up Penn State was fourth in scoring offense.

Six Standouts Earn NSCAA All-America Honors

Six women's soccer standouts have earned 2012 NSCAA/Continental Tire All-America honors, it was announced on Friday. Penn State's Maya Hayes and Christine Nairn were named to the first team, while Michigan's Haley Kopmeyer and Ohio State's Tiffany Cameron garnered second-team recognition. Illinois' Vanessa DiBernardo and Minnesota's Taylor Uhl were named to the third team. All players were first-team All-Big Ten selections this season, while DiBernardo, Hayes, and Nairn were each repeat All-America honorees.

Minnesota's Phillips Collects Academic All-America Honors

Minnesota women's soccer player Allie Phillips earned 2012 Capital One Academic All-America honors, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), it was announced on Thursday. The senior has been a key playmaker for the Golden Gophers, tallying four goals and eight assists this season, while leading Minnesota to a 11-7-2 overall record. Phillips is majoring in Biology and has maintained an overall GPA of 3.97.  

To be eligible for Academic All-America status, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at her current institution and be nominated by her sports information director.

Penn State's Cardona Earns Academic All-America Honors

Penn State men's soccer player Julian Cardona earned 2012 Capital One Academic All-America honors, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), it was announced on Thursday. A second-team All-Big Ten selection, Cardona finished the regular season fourth in the conference in points (14) and third in goals (6), while leading the Nittany Lions to a share of the Big Ten Championship.

To be eligible for Academic All-America status, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his current institution and be nominated by his sports information director.

Ohio State's Miller Named Manning Award Finalist

Ohio State football standout and Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year Braxton Miller was named a finalist for the Manning Award, it was announced on Wednesday. The award, which is sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, is given to the nation's top quarterback and was created in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. The winner is scheduled to be announced on Jan. 9. Purdue's Turner Named Sports Imports/AVCA Player of the Week

Purdue outside hitter Ariel Turner was named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week after leading the Boilermakers to back-to-back Big Ten wins. Turner recorded 18 kills on .366 hitting with 14 digs in a sweep of Indiana before posting a match-high 24 kills, 17 digs, four aces and three blocks in a four-set win against Wisconsin. The award is Turner's second of her career, with the most recent honor going to Rachel Davis on Nov. 15, 2011. Big Ten student-athletes have now claimed three national player of the week honors, as Penn State's Micha Hancock (Nov. 6) and Ohio State's Mari Hole (Nov. 13) were honored on back-to-back weeks.

Illinois' DiBernardo Named US Athlete of the Year Finalist

Illinois women's soccer standout Vanessa DiBernardo was named one of five finalists for U.S. Soccer's 2012 Young Female Athlete of the Year Award, it was announced on Monday. The award is one of the most prestigious awards in the sport, as the young athlete honor dates back to 1998. DiBernardo was a strong and essential force in the center midfield for the gold-medal winning U-20 U.S. Women's National Team and is a three-time first-team All-Big Ten selection for the Illini.

Fifty percent of the award is determined by online votes, while the other half is determined by national media and U.S. representatives. The winner will be announced Monday, Dec. 3.

Tom Brady, QB, New England Patriots (Michigan) - Threw for 323 yards and three touchdowns on 18-of-28 passing in New England's 49-19 defeat of the N.Y. Jets.

Owen Daniels, TE, Houston Texans (Wisconsin) - Caught four passes and recorded a touchdown in the Texans' 34-31 overtime win over the Lions.

Lavonte David, LB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Nebraska) - Tied for the team-lead with eight tackles, including one for loss, in the Bucs' 24-23 loss to the Falcons.

Larry Foote, LB, Pittsburgh Steelers (Michigan) - Totaled seven tackles in the Steelers' 20-14 loss to the Browns.

Chad Greenway, LB, Minnesota Vikings (Iowa) - Tallied seven tackles, including six solo, in the Vikings' 28-10 loss to the Bears.

A.J. Hawk, LB, Green Bay Packers (Ohio State) - Racked up a team-high 14 tackles, including eight solo, in the Packers' 38-10 loss to the Giants.

Kelvin Hayden, CB, Chicago Bears (Illinois) - Notched four tackles and two pass deflections in the Bears' 28-10 defeat of the Vikings.

Alex Henery, K, Philadephia Eagles (Nebraska) - Nailed all three of his field goals, including a long of 45 yards, in the Eagles' 30-22 loss to the Panthers.

Malcolm Jenkins, S, New Orleans Saints (Ohio State) - Tallied seven tackles, a pass deflection and blocked a kick in the Saints' 31-21 loss to the 49ers.

Dustin Keller, TE, New York Jets (Purdue) - Caught five passes for 67 yards and a touchdown in the Jets' 49-19 loss to the Patriots.

James Laurinaitis, LB, St. Louis Rams (Ohio State) - Racked up a team-high 11 tackles, an interception and a pass deflection in the Rams' 31-17 defeat of the Cardinals.

Corey Liuget, DE, San Diego Chargers (Illinois) - Recorded six tackles, including five solo, and a sack in the Chargers' 16-13 overtime loss to the Ravens.

Bernard Pollard, S, Baltimore Ravens (Purdue) - Recorded a team-high eight tackles, including seven solo, in the Ravens' 16-13 overtime victory over the Chargers.

Paul Posluszny, LB, Jacksonville Jaguars (Penn State) - Notched seven solo tackles and a forced fumble in the Jaguars' 24-19 win over the Titans.

Bryan Scott, S, Buffalo Bills (Penn State) - Totaled six tackles and a pass deflection in Buffalo's 20-13 loss to Indianapolis.

Anthony Spencer, LB, Dallas Cowboys (Purdue) - Recorded a team-high 10 tackles and two sacks in the Cowboys' 38-31 loss to the Redskins.

J.J. Watt, DE, Houston Texans (Wisconsin) - Tallied five tackles, three sacks and two pass deflections in Houston's 34-31 overtime win over Detroit.

Donte Whitner, S, San Francisco 49ers (Ohio State) -Racked up eight tackles, returned an interception for a touchdown and recorded a pass deflection in San Francisco's 31-21 victory over New Orleans.

Russell Wilson, QB, Seattle Seahawks (Wisconsin) - Threw for 224 yards and two touchdowns on 21-of-27 passing in the Seahawks' 24-21 loss to the Dolphins.

Antoine Winfield, Minnesota Vikings (Ohio State) - Registered seven solo tackles, an interception and a pass deflection in the Vikings' 28-10 loss to the Bears.

Penn State Named Tostitos Fiesta Bowl Team of the Week

The Penn State football team was named the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl's National Team of the Week as selected by the Football Writers Association of America, it was announced on Monday. The Nittany Lions grinded past Wisconsin in overtime for a 24-21 win on Saturday, following an emotional Senior Day ceremony. With the thrilling victory over the defending Big Ten champions, Penn State won for the eighth time in its last 10 games to finish with a 6-2 record in conference play and 8-4 mark overall.
