FH: Michigan, Northwestern Garner Weekly Field Hockey Awards

Northwestern's Chelsea Armstrong and Catherine Franklin and Michigan's Haley Jones have been awarded the Big Ten field hockey weekly honors, the conference office announced on Monday.  Armstrong earns the nod for Offensive Player of the Week, while Jones receives Defensive Player of the Week honors and Franklin earns Freshman of the Week recognition.

Big Ten field hockey conference play started last weekend, with Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern and Penn State picking up victories in their first Big Ten games of 2010.

SEPTEMBER 24

Northwestern (rv) def. #6 Ohio State, 3-2
#7 Michigan State def. Iowa, 1-0

#14 Penn State def. Indiana (rv), 1-0

 

SEPTEMBER 26

Michigan (rv) def. #14 Penn State, 2-0

FH: Big Ten Play Begins This Weekend

Conference play begins for Big Ten field hockey tonight as No. 6 Ohio State hosts Northwestern at 3 p.m. ET. Action continues with No. 7 Michigan State hosting Iowa and Michigan facing New Hampshire. Friday's games conclude with Indiana taking on No. 14 Penn State.

The weekend wraps up on Sunday with Iowa traveling to Central Michigan and Indiana visiting Bucknell.


Michigan also travels to Penn State on Sunday for a 1 p.m. ET start, which will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network. The complete weekend schedule can be found below.

FH: In the Polls

Three Big Ten teams ranked among the nation's top 20 in this week's Kookaburra/Division I National Field Hockey Coaches Poll, which was released on Tuesday.

As the No. 6 team in the nation, the Ohio State Buckeyes are 6-2 through non-conference play. Michigan State (8-1) remained in the top 10 with a No. 8 ranking, and Penn State (5-2) checked in at No. 14.

Indiana, Michigan, and Northwestern all earned points heading into the first weekend of conference play.

FH: PSU's Coach, Charlene Morett Earns 400th Win

As the Nittany Lions improved to 4-2 on the season with a 4-0 dominating victory over Temple on Friday, Penn State field hockey head coach Carlene Morett claimed her 400th win. Morett's 400th categorizes her among the elite, becoming only the fourth Division I coach in NCAA history to obtain the landmark. Including her three years as coach of the Boston College Eagles, her record sits at 400-161-17.

Three Big Ten field hockey teams appear in this week's Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll. Michigan State (7-0) moved up one spot in the poll, leading the way at No. 5. After climbing two positions, Ohio State (4-2) checks in at No. 10 in this week's rankings, while Penn State (2-2) moves up one spot to No. 15. Northwestern (5-3),  Indiana (2-2), Michigan (2-4) and Iowa (1-5) are receiving votes in the poll.

The conference office announced on Monday the third weekly field hockey award winners for the 2010 season. Following a two-win weekend, Michigan earned weekly honors with Rachael Mack winning Offensive Player of the Week. Continuing an undefeated season, Michigan State's Molly Cassidy earned her second weekly award, winning Defensive Player of the Week. Mack and Cassidy shared Freshman of the Week honors.

Three Big Ten field hockey teams have earned rankings in the first regular season Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll. Michigan State (5-0) moves up one spot from the preseason poll, sitting at No. 6. Both Ohio State (2-1) and Penn State (1-2) jump two spots in the national poll at No. 12 and No. 16 respectively. Indiana (1-1), Northwestern (3-3), Iowa (1-3) and Michigan (0-4) are receiving votes.

The conference office announced on Monday the second weekly field hockey award winners for the 2010 season. Northwestern sophomore Chelsea Armstrong earned honors on offense after posting a pair of two-goal games during the week, while Ayla Halus gave the Penn State Nittany Lions their second straight accolade as she earned Defensive Player of the Week. Michigan State's Katherine Jamieson earned her first Freshman of the Week honors.
