MSCR: Weekend Recap

Halloween weekend in Big Ten men's soccer closed with a bang, as the conference champion was crowned upon the completion of Sunday's action. With its 3-2 win over Northwestern, No. 25 Indiana clinched its 13th Big Ten Championship and its first since 2008. Michigan defeated No. 23 Michigan State in overtime and Ohio State took a 1-0 decision over Wisconsin to enter the final week of conference competition in a tie for second place.

The Big Ten Conference announced on Monday Michigan's Justin Meram and Ohio State's Matt Lampson as its men's soccer Players of the Week. Meram earns Offensive Player of the Week honors, while Lampson takes home his third Defensive Player of the Week accolade this season.

MSCR: Indiana Clinches Big Ten Championsip

Indiana has clinched the 2010 Big Ten men's soccer Championship after earning its fourth conference win of the season on Sunday against Northwestern. The Hoosiers have gone undefeated in their first five Big Ten matches this season, posting a 4-0-1 record. The title marks Indiana's 13th overall and first since 2008. The win also clinches the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten Tournament, which will be held on Nov. 11-14 in University Park, Pa.

Big Ten men's soccer is entering the home stretch of the 2010 regular season with just two weekends of conference competition remaining. Currently sitting in first place at 3-0-1, No. 25 Indiana can clinch the Big Ten Championship outright with a win over Northwestern on Sunday. The Wildcats sit three points behind the Hoosiers at 2-1-1. This weekend also features an intrastate battle between No. 23 Michigan State and Michigan on Saturday and a match between Wisconsin and Ohio State on Sunday.

Two Big Ten men's soccer teams appear in this week's NSCAA/HendrickCars.com national rankings. Michigan State (11-4-0 overall, 2-3-0 Big Ten) checks in at No. 23 in this week's poll. Indiana (8-4-2, 3-0-1) makes its return to the poll, holding No. 25 in the latest rankings. Penn State (9-5-1, 2-2-1) is receiving votes.

Indiana's Luis Soffner and Wisconsin's Chris Prince have earned Big Ten men's soccer weekly honors as announced on Monday. Prince is honored as the Big Ten's top offensive player for the week, while Soffner earns the nod on the defensive end.

Indiana extended its conference unbeaten streak to four matches on Sunday, defeating Michigan State, 3-0. The Hoosiers sit atop the Big Ten men's soccer standings with two games remaining. Northwestern kept pace, winning an overtime thriller against Wisconsin on Saturday to remain in a tie for second with Penn State. The Nittany Lions also earned a win, taking down No. 25 Ohio State in overtime on Saturday.

The race for Big Ten men's soccer supremacy heats up this weekend, as six of the seven conference teams are set to hit the pitch. The top six teams in the conference are separated by just three points entering the weekend, allowing for plenty of movement in the standings. Action kicks off on Saturday with No. 25 Ohio State traveling to take on Penn State. Northwestern also visits Wisconsin to round out Saturday's competition.

The matchup of the weekend pits first-place Indiana against No. 16 Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich., on Sunday afternoon. The Hoosiers bring a 2-0-1 conference mark into the contest, while the Spartans own a 2-2-0 record in Big Ten play, trailing Indiana by just one point.
