Eight Big Ten student-athletes have been named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Team, as announced on Thursday. To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30, have sophomore eligibility and be nominated by his or her sports information director. The Big Ten enjoyed a successful 2011 field hockey season highlighted by four teams earning bids to the NCAA Field Hockey Championship. Penn State earned the conference's automatic berth after winning the Big Ten Tournament. Big Ten Champion Michigan joined Iowa and Ohio State in the 16-team field, marking the 11th-straight season the conference has sent three or more teams to the national tournament and the fourth time in the last 17 seasons the conference has sent four or more teams to the championship. Where We Rank: All four of the Big Ten's NCAA tournament squads were ranked in the top-15 of the Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I National Poll at the end of the regular season. Penn State and Michigan were ranked seventh and eighth, respectively. Iowa finished 12th, while Ohio State was 15th. Indiana, Michigan State and Northwestern also received votes. and individual award winners on Thursday, Nov. 3, with Michigan, Northwestern,
Ohio State and Penn State collecting individual honors. The Wildcats' Chelsea Armstrong was named Offensive Player of the Year, while the Buckeyes' Jenn Sciulli took home Defensive Player of the Year honors. The Nittany Lions' Laura Gebhart was named Freshman of the Year, while the Wolverines' Marcia Pankratz earned Coach of the Year honors.
