Iowa Goes for NIT Title on Thursday

Michigan guard Trey Burke claimed a pair of national honors on Thursday, winning the Associated Press National Player of the Year and the Bob Cousy Award, given annually to the nation's top point guard. Burke becomes just the second Wolverine in program history to receive the AP award, joining U-M legend Cazzie Russell, who also earned the nation's top honor in 1966. Burke also becomes the first Wolverine in program history to earn the Cousy award, which has been given annually to the nation's top point guard since 2004.

Richard Pitino to Become Minnesota Head Coach

Richard Pitino has been selected as the finalist for the position of University of Minnesota men's head basketball coach. Pitino and the university have a reached an understanding in principle on the key terms of an agreement, according to Director of Athletics Norwood Teague.

Pitino recently served as head coach at Florida International for the 2012-13 season, where he guided the Panthers to an 18-14 mark, snapping a 12-year streak with a losing record, and the Sun Belt Tournament championship game.

The University of Iowa men's basketball team has a championship date Thursday after downing Maryland, 71-60, Tuesday night in the National Invitation Tournament semifinals in Madison Square Garden. The Hawkeyes will face Baylor for the NIT title. The Bears advanced courtesy of a 76-70 victory over BYU in the first game of Tuesday's NIT doubleheader. "We're used to playing in close games, teams making runs and coming back on us," said junior Roy Devyn Marble, who led all scorers with 21 points. "We had to make plays down the stretch, and we did that again tonight. As long as we continue to do that, we should be able to close out games efficiently." RECAP

The NCAA announced on Tuesday that three Big Ten standouts earned Consensus All-America honors, including two to earn unanimous distinction. The NCAA utilizes the All-America squads from the Associated Press, the National Association of Basketball Coaches, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association and The Sporting News to determine consensus honorees. Indiana's Victor Oladipo and Michigan's Trey Burke were named Unanimous First-Team All-Americans, while Indiana's Cody Zeller garnered Consensus Second-Team All-America honors. Oladipo garners Indiana's first first-team distinction since A.J. Guyton in 2000, while Burke is the first Wolverine to claim the accolade since Chris Webber in 1993.

Former Purdue Coach Keady Elected to Hall of Fame

Former Purdue men's basketball coach Gene Keady has been elected to the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame as part of its seven-man induction class of 2013, it was announced this week. Keady and the rest of the class will be officially inducted into the Hall on Nov. 24 at the Midland Theatre in Kansas City. Including his 512 wins in his 25 seasons at Purdue, Keady boasts 550 wins in his career as a Division I coach and 879 triumphs all-time in various head coaching capacities. He guided the Boilermakers to six Big Ten Championships and 22 postseason appearances.

Michigan Final Four Bound After Win Over Florida

The fourth-seeded University of Michigan men's basketball team (No. 10 AP, No. 11 ESPN/USA Today) advanced to the NCAA Tournament Final Four with a 79-59 triumph over third-seeded Florida (No. 14 AP, No. 12 ESPN/USA Today) on Sunday inside Cowboys Stadium. Freshman guard Nik Stauskas scored 19 first-half points, including five three-pointers, helping the Wolverines to leads of 13-0 and 23-5 early in the opening half. In addition to Stauskas' game-high 22 points and career-high six triples, sophomore guard Trey Burke finished with 15 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, while freshman forward Mitch McGary added 11 points and nine rebounds. U-M shot 30-of-65 (46 percent) from the floor in the game, including 10-of-19 (53 percent) from behind the arc while holding Florida to just 23-of-56 (41 percent) from the field and 2-of-10 (20 percent) from three-point range. The Wolverine defense forced 15 Gator turnovers, including 13 steals, off which it converted 16 points. Michigan also led Florida 21-4 in fastbreak points. RECAP
