Hot Dogs, Get Your Hot Dogs!

One of the unique features Indianapolis and Bankers Life Fieldhouse offers as host of the Big Ten Basketball Tournaments is a signature food item.  In past years, BLF, in conjunction with Levy Restaurants, have put together Big Ten school-specific burgers and baked potatoes, but this year the food of choice was the hot dog.

Each Big Ten school is represented by a different style of hot dog.  The concession stands throughout the venue keep track of how many school hot dogs are sold and write the totals on a large scoreboard near the register.

Halfway through Friday's action, Indiana's "dawg" featuring coleslaw, red pepper relish and fried onions held a commanding lead with 224 sold.  Of course, the fact that the Hoosier Nation contributed to a sold-out BLF today also helped spike the total.  In second today with 115 sold was Michigan State, which offers the "dawq" with pepper jack cheese, jalapeno pickle relish and spicy mustard.

IOWA Street Sign.JPGOne of the true signs -- literally and figuratively -- that show how Indianapolis embraces the Big Ten Basketball Tournaments can be found on several light poles downtown near Bankers Life Fieldhouse.  One week ago, the Indianapolis Star's Stephen Beard designed a clever map of the downtown area so Big Ten fans could find their way around, not to mention find their way to their favorite street!

Below is a breakdown of where each school is represented in the downtown area, followed by Beard's design.

The Best of Times, The Worst of Times

Michigan fan Phil Bates and Michigan State fan Wayne Abbott have been friends for more than 30 years.  Bates, a resident of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Abbott, an East Lansing native, were proudly displaying their school colors when caught up with them at the 2012 Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament.

Their friendship has been tested in the past when the Spartans and Wolverines have battled one another on the court, but even has recent as last Sunday, feelings were hurt when one team's actions rewarded the other with a Big Ten title.

"Between losing the last two games and giving Michigan the (Big Ten tri-) championship, it's sad," said Abbott.

Still the friends are here in attendance together and hope the brackets play out to where their two favorite teams can meet in the Big Ten Tournament final.

Should that happen, one can only wonder what that car ride back to Michigan will be like.
