2011 Men's Soccer Season in Review

The Big Ten enjoyed a successful 2011 men's soccer season capped by Indiana and Northwestern earning a trip to the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship. After winning both the Big Ten Championship and Big Ten Tournament, the Wildcats earned the conference's automatic bid. The Hoosiers earned their 25th consecutive NCAA Championship appearance and advanced round of 16.

Where We Rank: Indiana and Northwestern earned spots in the final NSCAA/Continental Tire National Rankings, as announced on Dec. 14. The Hoosiers (13-4-5) clocked in at No. 10, while the Wildcats (11-5-5) finished at No. 22.

All-America Recognition: Indiana's Chris Estridge was named to the 2011 NCAA Men's Soccer All-America Team, as announced on Friday, Dec. 9. The First Team All-Big Ten selection was part of a Hoosier defense that allowed only 19 goals in 22 contests. Estridge earned First Team All-America recognition.

Estridge will be honored at the annual All-America luncheon on Saturday, Jan. 14.

All-Region Selections:
Nine Big Ten student-athletes were named to the All-Great Lakes Team, as announced on Friday, Dec. 9. First Team selections included Indiana's Chris Estridge and Eriq Zavaleta, Northwestern's Oliver Kupe and Ohio State's Matt Lampson. Second Team honorees were Indiana's Nikita Kotlov, Northwestern's Tyler Miller, Ohio State's Chris Hegngi and David Tiemstra and Wisconsin's Tomislav Zadro.

Northwestern head coach Tim Lenahan was named the NSCAA/Mondo Regional Coach of the Year for the Great Lakes region, as announced on Saturday, Dec. 3. Lenahan guided the Wildcats to an 11-5-5 record, which included a Big Ten Championship and Big Ten Tournament crown.

The national award will be announced on Friday, Jan. 13, at the NSCAA Convention.

B1G Postseason Accolades: The Big Ten Conference announced its men's soccer All-Big Ten teams and individual award winners at the Big Ten Tournament banquet on Thursday, Nov. 10. Ohio State's Chris Hegngi took home Offensive Player of the Year accolades, while teammate David Tiemstra earned the Defensive Player of the Year award. Indiana's Eriq Zavaleta received Freshman of the Year honors, and Northwestern head coach Tim Lenahan reeled in the Coach of the Year award.

Academic All-District:
The Capital One Academic All-District Men's Soccer Teams were released with three Big Ten student-athletes receiving recognition.

Indiana's Harrison Petts and Wisconsin's Max Jentsch and Nick Janus were honored for their performances in the classroom and the playing field. All three are First-Team Academic All-District honorees and will advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, which will be selected later this month.

Indiana senior defenders Chris Estridge and Tommy Meyer were selected in the 2012 Major League Soccer Superdraft held in Kansas City.

Meyer was taken in the first round and 19th overall by the Los Angeles Galaxy. Estridge was taken two slots later and 21st overall by the Vancouver Whitecaps in the second round.
