Illinois' Andrew Riley has been named National Men's Track Athlete of the Year, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Association announced on Wednesday. The Illini senior became the first male in NCAA history to win the 100 meters and 110 hurdles at the same outdoor championships.

Eighty-seven Big Ten student-athletes have been named USTFCCCA All-Americans, based on their performances at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Illinois' Andrew Riley was one of four men to earn All-America honors in three events, and made NCAA history by becoming the first man to win both the 100 dash and 100 hurdles at the same NCAA championship meet. First-team recognition is awarded to student-athletes that earn a top-eight finish at the national championships, while second-team honors are awarded to ninth to 16th place finishers.

Five Big Ten outdoor track and field teams have been awarded Regional Athlete of the Year and Coach of the Year honors, the USTFCCCA announced on Monday.

Illinois' Andrew Riley (Midwest Region) and Wisconsin's Mohammed Ahmed (Great Lakes Region) were tabbed Men's Track Athlete of the Year, while Indiana's Derek Drouin (Great Lakes Region) and Penn State's Jordan Kovacs (Mid-Atlantic Region) were named Men's Field Athlete of the Year. The Badgers' Ed Nuttycombe was honored as Men's Coach of the Year, while the Hoosiers' Jeff Huntoon and the Nittany Lions' Chris Johnson were tabbed Men's Assistant of the Year.

On the women's side, Christina Manning (Great Lakes) was named Women's Track Athlete of the Year, and Wisconsin's Jessica Flax was tabbed Women's Field Athlete of the Year. The Buckeyes' Karen Dennis took home Women's Coach of the Year honors, and the Badgers' Nate Davis earned Women's Assistant Coach of the Year laurels.

Seventeen Big Ten student-athletes have been named to the Capital One Academic All-District Men's and Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Teams, as announced on Thursday. The teams are selected to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined athletic and academic performances.

First team honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team Ballot, which will be selected in June.

The Big Ten will be well-represented at the 2012 NCAA Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships, as 96 individual qualifiers and 12 relay squads travel to Des Moines, Iowa, for the national event, scheduled for June 6-9. The participants qualified based on their finish at the preliminary championships, which were held May 24-26.

NCAA Track & Field Preliminary Field Announced

The NCAA announced today the participants for the 2012 NCAA Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field Preliminary Championship competition, scheduled for May 24-26. The East Region will be held at North Florida in Jacksonville, while the West Region is at Texas in Austin.
