XC/T&F: Three Named Academic All-Americans

Three Big Ten student-athletes were selected to the 2009-10 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Men's Track and Field and Cross Country Teams, as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America, it was announced on Tuesday morning.

After finishing fourth in the 1,500 meters at the NCAA Championships, Wisconsin's Jack Bolas was selected a first-team member, having been chosen for the second team in 2009. A pair of Minnesota student-athletes made the teams as Mike Torchia earned a spot on the second team, while teammate Aaron Studt was a third-team selection.

T&F: Big Ten FInishes With 37 All-America Honors

A total of 37 Big Ten student-athletes, 17 men and 20 women, were named United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Americans on Tuesday as a result of top-eight finishes at last weekend's NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Iowa led all men's honorees with five, thanks in part to its top-eight finish in the 4x400 meter relay on the final night of competition. The Penn State women were awarded nine All-America certificates, the most of any women's team in the Big Ten. Iowa's Steven Willey, along with Penn State's Aleesha Barber, Fawn Dorr and Shavon Greaves each earned two All-America honors at the championships.

Two Big Ten student-athletes won national championships on Saturday, bringing the conference total to three, during the final day of competition at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Hayward Track on the University of Oregon campus. In total, the conference saw 15 All-America efforts during the final day of competition.

Penn State's Bridget Franek crossed the tape first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 9:38.36, more than 10 seconds ahead of the field, to claim her first NCAA championship. Illinois' Andrew Riley became the first national champion for the Illini since 1997 after winning the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 13.45.

T&F: Three Named All-Americans on Day 2 at NCAAs

On the second day of the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the University of Oregon's Hayward Track in Eugene, Ore., Thursday, three student-athletes earned All-America honors, while 10 student-athletes and two relays advanced to their respective event finals.

Big Ten Medal of Honor Award Winners Announced

The Big Ten Conference office announced on Wednesday the 2010 Medal of Honor winners. The award was established in 1914 when the Big Ten endowed a Medal of Honor to be given annually to a student in the graduating class of each university that demonstrated proficiency in scholarship and athletics. In 1982, the Medal of Honor was expanded to include a senior female athlete from each institution.

T/F: NCAA Outdoor Championships Preview

The Big Ten Conference will be well represented when the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships begin on Wednesday, June 9, at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. The four-day meet will be hosted by the University of Oregon, and all 10 conference squads will send student-athletes to compete for national prominence.

It was announced on Thursday that 15 Big Ten student-athletes were selected to the 2010 CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District Men's and Women's Track/Cross Country Teams. Those earning first-team selections are now eligible for All-America consideration.

Track and Field: NCAA Preliminary Round Lineups Set

The NCAA announced on Friday the qualifiers for the 2010 Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field East and West Preliminary Rounds, scheduled for May 27-29. The East Region Preliminary Round will take place in Greensboro, N.C., while the West Region will compete in Austin, Texas.

The top 48 competitors in each event and 24 relay teams from each region will compete at their respective site. The top 12 finishers in each event from each region will advance to the NCAA Championships, scheduled for June 9-12 at the University of Oregon.

The final day of the 2010 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex at Indiana University saw the Minnesota men and Penn State women successfully defend their championships from a year ago.
