What does it Mean to be a Spartan?

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

9:30 p.m.: It was a good night here in Spartan country. Many students and Spartan fans came out to see the Stagg-Paterno trophy on its first day in East Lansing.  The second stop on the tour was at the women's basketball game.  The defending Big Ten Champs kicked off their season with a dominating 94-31 exhibition win over Lake Superior State.

Another item on our list of reasons of what it means to be a Spartan is the amount of support that surrounds our athletic teams. Whether it's our hockey coach attending a football game or our baseball coach attending a hockey game, there is a strong bond between our athletic teams, coaches and fans that help build what us in East Lansing like to call 'Spartan Pride'. Some members of the men's basketball team and their coach Tom Izzo came out to support the women's team tonight. The men's basketball team is back in action tomorrow when it competes in an exhibition game against Hillsdale at 7 p.m. The trophy will be making a stop at this game from 6:15- 8:30 p.m. You can come take your picture with the trophy outside of section 129.

Some MSU student-athletes took the time out of their busy practice schedules to share with us what it means to them to be a Spartan.  Check out senior quarterback Kirk Cousins, sophomore linebacker Max Bullough, senior wide receiver B.J. Cunningham, senior field hockey back Holly Sherman and junior ice hockey captain Torey Krug all had to say about what it means to have Spartan pride in the video posted below.

Hope you all are having as much fun as I am on the Michigan State stop of the tour so far! Make sure to tweet at @B1gMobileTour what it means to be a Spartan. The Stagg-Paterno trophy will be up early tomorrow, making a stop at the WLNS-TV parking lot for their morning show. It then heads on over to the Brody cafeteria from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. for some lunch. Have a great night Big Ten country and GO GREEN!

1:00 p.m.: It's finally here! The Stagg-Paterno trophy has arrived on the campus of MSU and swung by the MSU Union to make its first stop. The Union is a place where students can come to study, grab coffee, some ice cream from the Dairy Store (my favorite part) or even go bowling! The Diary Store features flavors that represent every school in the Big Ten and its most recent addition is Huskers Sweet Corn ice cream. The Union is a building that has reserved its place on the lengthy list of reasons of what it means to be a Spartan.

Many students visited the trophy on their way to and from class. They were eager to learn about the leaders and legends divisions as well as get a glimpse of the trophy that all Spartans are hoping will return to our campus in December.

Stay tuned in for a video to see how some Spartan student-athletes answer the question 'what does it mean to be a Spartan?' You'll hear from MSU football captain Kirk Cousins and ice hockey captain Torey Krug as well as many others!  We'll see you at the women's basketball exhibition game later.

Good evening Spartan Nation and Big Ten fans!

My name is Brittany McCormick and I will be your student reporter for the Michigan State stop on the Big Ten Mobile Tour. The Stagg-Paterno Trophy could not be stopping at our campus on a more beautiful, fall weekend. We have sunny skies, warm weather (rare for this time in Michigan) and midterms are wrapping up. While some of our sports, such as field hockey and women's soccer, are on the road competing in Big Ten Tournaments, we have plenty of Spartan events happening on campus.

The defending Big Ten Women's Basketball Champions take on Lake Superior State in its first exhibition game on Thursday at 7 p.m. The men's basketball team also plays in an exhibition game against Hillsdale at 7 p.m. on Friday. And of course, the main reason why the trophy is here, the No. 15 MSU football team takes on Minnesota in a Legends division match up on Saturday at noon.

The Stagg-Paterno trophy will be at all of those events including two staple buildings on MSU's campus, the MSU Union and the Brody cafeteria.

I'm very excited to document the championship trophy's journey around the campus of Michigan State and to show the other members of the Big Ten what it means to be a Spartan. And this is where I need your help Spartan Nation! Tweet us your answers (@B1gMobileTour) on what it means to you to be a Spartan and we will retweet them or even post some right here on the blog.

I'm looking forward to getting the tour started up. See you at the MSU Union tomorrow! GO GREEN!

"My name is Brittany McCormick and I am a senior at Michigan State University. I am pursing a degree in communication and public relations. While I do go to school in Michigan, I am originally from the east coast, New Jersey to be exact. I came to MSU not knowing anyone but in the past three years, I have met some amazing people that I know I will stay in contact with for the rest of my life. I am also a student assistant for the MSU athletic communications department - a job I wouldn't trade for the world. I am passionate about everything I do and the things I love like the Jersey Shore (the actual beach- not the show), ice cream, my friends and family, and of course, sports. I am extremely excited to be State's reporter for the Mobile Tour. GO GREEN!"

What an exciting game day the Gopher Football team and its fans had! Minnesota battled Iowa in a close game today and came out to win 22-21. It was a close game all the way through and Iowa came out strong, but the Gophers were there to win. We are so glad the Mobile Tour was here to share in our exciting day, maybe it was even our good luck charm?! Having the Stagg-Paterno Big Ten Championship trophy on campus was motivation, and the Gophers got it done!

Many Gopher fans stormed the field after such an exciting game, and it was an exciting game for any and all Gopher fans. The Floyd of Rosedale trophy made its way around as the team celebrated such an exciting Big Ten game. Check out some of the photos from the Mobile Tour on TCF Bank Stadium's plaza as well as some exciting pictures from the game below.

It was a great match up between the two Legends Division teams, but the Gophers will keep their trophy for another year! Great job Gopher Football! Stay tuned for a recap tomorrow on the entire B1G Ten Mobile Tour's stay in Minnesota! Congratulations Gopher Football!

Saturday is finally here! Big Ten fans look forward to Saturdays in the fall for this very reason: football game days. Today is no exception as the Big Ten's Mobile Tour makes its final stop for the week at TCF Bank Stadium, home of the Legends Division team, the Minnesota Gophers.

Gopher football will be taking on the Iowa Hawkeyes this afternoon here at TCF Bank Stadium, both teams fighting for the Floyd of Rosedale Trophy. We have been looking forward to this all week as we cannot wait to see the thousands of Gophers fans in their maroon and gold before the start of the game. Remember, the one and only Stagg-Paterno Big Ten Championship Trophy will be out with the Mobile Tour today as well as some interactive games. Don't forget Gopher fans, get there early to stop by and see us and to get some free lunch from your head coach, Jerry Kill.

The Mobile Tour will be out at TCF Bank Stadium's Gate E starting at 11:30 this morning. Stay updated on everything Big Ten Mobile Tour today by following us on Twitter. GO GOPHERS!

B1G Ten Soccer Fans Met the Stagg-Paterno Trophy

The Big Ten Mobile Tour made its way to Minnesota's St. Paul Campus tonight for the Women's Soccer matchup between the Gophers and a fellow Legends Division team, the Nebraska Huskers.

Nebraska came out strong at the start of the game with a goal in the first twenty seconds, but that didn't discourage the Gophers and they came back and scored right away, going on to win the game 6-3. This was a big game for the Mobile Tour to attend because this game clinched the Gophers the fifth seed spot in the Big Ten Soccer Tournament. The Big Ten Soccer Tournament will be hosted by another fellow Legends Division team, Northwestern, next week. This was also an exciting game for Gophers' Uhl as she scored her second hat trick of the season and only the twelfth hat trick in Gopher Soccer history.

Congratulations to Uhl and all of Gopher Soccer! The Big Ten Mobile Tour was glad they could be there for such a great game for the Gophers. Check out some of our photos below:

We were pleased to see so many Big Ten fans brave the cold to see us tonight, thank you! We hope to see many more of you tomorrow at Gopher Football game day! The B1G Ten Mobile Tour will be out in full force tomorrow at TCF Bank Stadium's Gate E, so stop by Big Ten fans! Go Gophers!
