2012 London Olympics Central: Day 14

Jordan Burroughs (USA, Nebraska) struck gold in London today, defeating Iran's Sadegh Saeed Goudarzi at 74kgs in the men's freestyle. Burroughs, who has now won 38 straight freestyle matches, took down Goudarzi 1-0, 1-0 en route to his first Olympic gold. For the results of today's gold medal match, click HERE.

Deron Williams (Illinois) and the USA men's basketball squad throttled Argentina 109-83, advancing to Sunday's gold medal match against Spain. Williams scored six points with six assists en route to victory.

2012 London Olympics Central: Day 13

Betsey Armstrong (Michigan) and the USA water polo squad struck gold today, defeating Spain 8-5 in the gold medal match. The USA women wins its first gold in water polo, after bronze in 2004 and silver in 2008. If you missed it, check it out HERE.

Barbara Spotakova (Minnesota, Czech Republic) can add another gold medal to her collection, as the former Golden Gopher captured gold at her second consecutive Summer Games in the javelin throw. Spotakova notched a distance of 69.55 meters, topping Germany's Christina Obergfoll by over four meters. For the complete standings, click HERE.

Lindsay Whalen (Minnesota) and the USA women's basketball squad defeated Australia 86-73 on Thursday, advancing to Saturday's gold medal match. The USA found themselves down four points after two periods, with Australia connecting on 61 percent of their field goals in the first half. The USA held the Australian team to only nine field goals after the break, outscoring their opponents 43-28 en route to victory. The USA will face France in the gold medal game. Head coach Hugh McCutcheon (Minnesota) and the USA women's volleyball squad continued their dominant performance in London on Thursday, defeating Korea in straight sets to earn a spot in Saturday's gold medal match. The USA team, featuring Lindsey Berg (Minnesota), Jordan Larson (Nebraska), Christa Harmotto (Penn State) and Megan Hodge (Penn State), have not dropped a set in five consecutive matches. The USA will now face Brazil in a 2008 gold medal rematch, as the Brazilian squad took down the Americans in 2008.

The Canadian women's soccer team, featuring Emily Zurrer (Illinois), Karina Leblanc (Nebraska), Brittany Timko (Nebraska), Erin McLeod (Penn State), Carmelina Moscato (Penn State) and Lauren Sesselmann (Purdue), claimed a bronze medal this morning with their 1-0 win over France. France attempted 25 shots, including four on goal, but goalkeeper McLeod and defenders Moscato and Sesselman helped to hold the Canadian squad scoreless. Derek Drouin (Canada, Indiana) won a bronze medal in the men's high jump on Tuesday, posting a leap 2.29 meters for a third-place finish. Jeff Porter (USA, Michigan), also qualified through first-round heats of the 110 hurdles and will compete in the semifinals on Wednesday. Barbora Spotakova (Czech Republic, Minnesota) posted the top qualifying distance in the javelin throw, while Ineta Radevica (Latvia, Nebraska) qualified for the women's long jump final.

Goalkeeper Betsey Armstrong (Michigan) and the USA women's water polo squad took down Australia in an 11-9 thriller this morning, advancing to Thursday's gold medal match. Tied 9-9 at the end of regulation, the USA team posted two goals in the first overtime period, while Armstrong held the Australians scoreless in the extra frames. The USA will face the winner of Hungary-Spain in the finals.

The Big Ten was heavily represented in women's soccer semifinal action today, as the USA took down Canada (4-3) in semifinal action. The Canadian team features six players from Big Ten institutions, including Emily Zurrer (Illinois), Karina Leblanc (Nebraska), Brittany Timko (Nebraska), Erin McLeod (Penn State), Carmelina Moscato (Penn State) and Lauren Sesselmann (Purdue). Japan defeated France (2-1) this morning and will face the USA match up in Thursday's gold medal game. Canada will take on France in Thursday's bronze medal match. 2012 London Olympics Central: Day 7

Michael Phelps (USA, Michigan) earned the 17th gold medal of his career and 21st overall, placing first in the 100 butterfly in London. Phelps clocked a time of 51.21 to stand atop the podium for the third time in the 2012 Games. Phelps has now captured three golds and two silvers at the London Games.

The USA women's volleyball squad, featuring head coach Hugh McCutcheon (Minnesota), Lindsey Berg (Minnesota), Jordan Larson (Nebraska), Christa Harmotto (Penn State) and Megan Hodge (Penn State), clinched the top seed in Group B with a 3-0 win over Serbia on Friday. Click HERE to watch the replay.

2012 London Olympics Central: Day 6

Michael Phelps (USA, Michigan) swam to gold in the 200 individual medley on Thursday, becoming the first man to win the same individual event in three consecutive Olympic Games. Phelps has now tallied an Olympic record 20 medals in his career, including 16 of the gold variety. Fellow Wolverine Tyler Clary (USA) also added to the Big Ten medal count with an Olympic record gold medal performance in the 200 backstroke.

Janine Hanson (Canada, Michigan) captured a silver medal this morning in the women's eight rowing event. Hanson and the Canadian squad stroked to a second place finish in 6:12.06. The USA (6:10.59) and Netherlands (6:13.12) took home gold and bronze, respectively. Watch the full replay HERE.

Men's basketball features six preliminary games today with Robert Archibald (Great Britain, Illinois), Ade Dagunduro (Nigeria, Nebraska), Aleks Maric (Australia, Nebraska) and Deron Williams (USA, Illinois) taking the court. HERE. Williams and the USA basketball team throttled Nigeria, 156-73, on a record-breaking night. Williams tallied 13 points as the Americans breezed to a victory, setting Olympic records for points in a game and points in a half (78). The USA is undefeated in preliminary action (3-0) and sits alone atop the Group A standing. Watch a replay of the game HERE.

In a match-up of Group B heavyweights, Matt Anderson (Penn State) and the USA men's volleyball squad thwarted Brazil, 3-1, in a 2008 Olympic Gold Medal rematch. Natalie Dell (USA, Penn State) notched a bronze medal on Wednesday in the women's rowing quadruple sculls event. Dell, along with Kara Kohler, Megan Kalmoe and Adrienne Martelli, finished in 6:40.63 to place third. Ukraine (6:35.93) and Germany (6:38.09) took home gold and silver, respectively. Margaux Farrell (France, Indiana) captured bronze Wednesday afternoon in the 4x200 freestyle relay. Farrell was apart of France's qualifying relay squad.

After defeating No. 2 Brazil on Monday, the USA women's volleyball team took down No. 3 China 3-0 on Wednesday. 2012 London Olympics Central: Day 4

Michael Phelps (USA, Michigan) became the most decorated athlete in Olympic history today, breaking the Olympic record with his 19th overall medal. Phelps swam the anchor leg of the 4x200 freestyle relay, touching the wall in 6:59.70 for the victory. The three-time Olympian also claimed a silver in the 200 butterfly. Former Wolverines Charlie Houchin and Davis Tarwater also took home gold medals, helping the USA post the fastest 4x200 relay time in the morning heats.
