Six Big Ten rowing squads were ranked or receiving votes in the latest CRCA/USRowing Coaches poll, released on Wednesday. Defending Big Ten and NCAA Champion Ohio State led conference teams in the poll, coming in at No. 2. Michigan joined the Buckeyes in the top 10 as the Wolverines were tied for the ninth spot. Wisconsin checked in at No. 16, while Iowa, Michigan State and Minnesota were all receiving votes.

2013 Rowing Season in Review

The 2013 Big Ten rowing season came to a close at the NCAA Championships, where Ohio State claimed its first national team title after earning first-place finishes in the first varsity four and second varsity eight.

National Champions: The No. 1 Ohio State rowing team made program history on Sunday, June 2, at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis, claiming its first national team title after earning first-place finishes in the first varsity four and second varsity eight and a third-place effort in the first varsity eight. The Buckeyes are the first Big Ten team to win a national team title in rowing. The Ohio State first varsity four, made up of Taylore Urban, Sara Handa, Chloe Meyer, Aina Cid-Centelles and coxswain Dara Schnoll, crossed the finish line in 7:08.26, just under three seconds ahead of second-place USC. The second varsity eight crew of Daphne Socha, Katie Beletskaya, Silvia DeMatteis, Stephanie Johnson, Nicole Becks, Lauren Eckles, Samantha Fowle, Catherine Shields and coxswain Amanda Poll closed out the season with a perfect 12-0 record after recording a time of 6:27.86 to claim the national crown. NCAA Participants: Three Big Ten teams were selected to the 2013 NCAA Rowing Championships, as Michigan, Ohio State and Wisconsin earned bids to the event. The Wolverines made their 13th appearance in the meet, the Buckeyes made their 14th consecutive visit, and 15th overall, to the national event and the Badgers appeared in the regatta for the 10th time. Big Ten Champions: Ohio State won its fourth Big Ten title at the 2013 Big Ten Rowing Championships at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis on May 19th. The Buckeyes recorded 160 points, a new championships record, on the strength of five first-place finishes. Ohio State tallied wins in the first varsity eight, second varsity eight, first varsity four, third varsity four and first novice eight. Individual Awards: The Big Ten office announced on Wednesday, may 22, the rowing individual award winners, as chosen by the conference coaches. Ohio State's Claire-Louise Bode was named Big Ten Athlete of the Year, while teammate Catherine Shields was tabbed Co-Freshman of the Year with Michigan State's Katie Cromie. Academic All-District: Wisconsin's Kendall Schmidt was named to the Capital One Academic All-District, it was announced on Thursday, May 16th. The Academic All-District team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their performances in the classroom and athletically. The complete list of Big Ten honorees can be found here.

Regional Honors: Prior to the NCAA Championships, the CRCA announced that Ohio State head coach Andy Teitelbaum was named its Central Regional Coach of the Year, while Buckeye assistant coach Diana Albrecht was tabbed Central Regional Assistant Coach of the Year. In addition, Indiana's Madelyn, Iowa's Katy Kroll, Michigan's Jessica Eiffert and Melisa Ongun, Michigan State's Katie Cromie, Minnnesota's Cassie Drozynski and Ohio State's Claire-Louise Bode and Allison Eber were named first-team All-Region.
