Five Squads Receiving Votes in Latest Polls

Five Big Ten teams are receiving votes in the national rankings this week. Michigan remains in the top 10 in both the USA Softball and NFCA polls, appearing at No. 9. Nebraska is tied for 16th in the USA Softball poll and ranked 20th in the NFCA standings. Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin each are receiving votes in the USA Softball poll and Wisconsin appears outside the NFCA top 25.

Illinois 8, Indiana 0
The Fighting Illini were fantastic on offense and defense this afternoon, cruising to an 8-0 rout of the Indiana Hoosiers to complete a sweep of the three-game Big Ten series. Sophomore Shelese Arnold threw her second-straight two-hit shutout, and seven different Illini batters collected hits in front of one of the largest crowds to watch a game at Eichelberger Field this season. Michigan 8, Iowa 6 (Game 1); Michigan 8, Iowa 0 (Game 2)
The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan softball team belted two home runs, including a grand slam from freshman Sierra Lawrence, to top Iowa, 8-6, in game one of a doubleheader and then used an 11-hit attack and shutout from sophomore Sara Driesenga to take game two, 8-0, in five innings today at the Wilpon Complex. The pair of victories extends U-M's win streak to 21 games and keeps the squad perfect in the Big Ten with a 16-0 mark. The triumph in game two marked the 15th run-rule win for the Wolverines in 2013. RECAP

Northwestern 2, Penn State 1
One game after both teams combined for 31 runs at Beard Field, Northwestern defeated Penn State, 2-1, Sunday to sweep the series against the Nittany Lions. NU earns its second Big Ten sweep of the year with its win, moving to 25-16 overall on the year and 9-5 in the conference. The game marked the first time in their last 11 contests that the Wildcats failed to score at least seven runs; still, NU earned its fifth-straight victory. RECAP

Purdue 6, Nebraska 5
The Boilermaker softball team held on for a 6-5 win over No. 15 Nebraska on Sunday, marking the team's first win over a ranked opponent in 14 tries in 2013 and first since March 20, 2010. Nebraska scored first, but the Boilermakers put up five runs in the bottom of the first inning and added an insurance run in the second en route to the win. Purdue scored its six runs on 10 hits and an error, while the Huskers managed five runs on seven hits. Sophomore Lexy Moore (9-10) picked up the win, striking out two in four and a third innings, while freshman Lilly Fecho earned the save. RECAP

Wisconsin 4, Ohio State 2
A strong wind off of Lake Mendota didn't stop the Wisconsin softball team's offense Sunday afternoon, as the Badgers used a pair of home runs to power past Ohio State, 4-2, at Goodman Diamond. The victory capped off Wisconsin's weekend Big Ten Conference three-game sweep of the Buckeyes. RECAP

The Fighting Illini softball team picked up a pair of one-run victories this afternoon, using prolific offense to defeat Big Ten rival Indiana, 5-4, in extra innings, then capitalized on a two-hit shutout by Shelese Arnold to slide by the Hoosiers, 1-0, in the night cap. With the pair of wins, the Illini move past the Hoosiers in the conference standings, finishing the day at 13-23 (3-11 Big Ten), while Indiana drops to 19-26 (3-12 Big Ten). "Winning the first game in extra innings and the second with a 1-0 shutout was big for our team," said Head Coach Terri Sullivan. RECAP

Northwestern 17, Penn State 14 (8)
Northwestern and Penn State accounted for 31 runs on 28 hits and 18 walks Saturday in an extra-inning slugfest that saw both teams use eight combined pitchers by the fifth inning, but in the end the Wildcats plated three runs in the top of the eighth to take a 17-14 (8) victory and go up 2-0 in the series. NU's 17 runs are the most it has scored in a single game since hanging 17 on Minnesota in a 17-8 (6) run-rule victory on March 30, 2008. NU has scored at least seven runs in each of its last 10 contests this season. RECAP

Nebraska 5, Purdue 2 (9) (Game 1); Nebraska 12, Purdue 2 (Game 2)
Game 1: On a day when timely hits were not falling for the 18th-ranked Nebraska softball team, a seventh-inning home run from Tatum Edwards forced extra innings and a ninth-inning home run from Courtney Breault completed the comeback, as Nebraska won game one of a Saturday doubleheader at Purdue, 5-2. Game 2: Behind a solid outing from freshman right-hander Emily Lockman and a 12-run effort out of the Husker offense, the 18th-ranked Nebraska softball team completed a doubleheader sweep of Purdue with a 12-2 victory in game two Saturday afternoon. RECAP

Michigan 5, Iowa 3
A four-run rally in the sixth inning, including a two-run pinch-hit single from freshman Kelsey Susalla (Garden City, Mich./Garden City), turned the game around for the No. 9-ranked University of Michigan softball team today (Saturday, April 20) in a 5-3 comeback win over the Iowa Hawkeyes at the Wilpon Complex. Wisconsin 7, Ohio State 6 (10) (Game 1); Wisconsin 3, Ohio State 1 (Game 2) With the sun shining, the sky blue and the ice off Lake Mendota, the Wisconsin softball team found a perfect day to win two at Goodman Diamond. The Badgers posted a come-from-behind, 10-inning victory over Ohio State to start the series, before winning, 3-1, in the day's second game to sweep the day. "It was great to be home and get wins," said head coach Yvette Healy. "We haven't been outside that much and it has been cold. When you play team like Ohio State, you know it is always going to be a battle." RECAP

Penn State 8, Purdue 4 (Game 1); Purdue 12, Penn State 3 (Game 2)
Game 1: The Nittany Lions put together an 11-hit effort to take game one, 8-4. Bell, Furuya, Habitz and Renwick notched two-hit performances, including a pair of doubles from Habitz, while Johnson, Sovereign and Hutchinson had one apiece. Sovereign led the team with two RBI and Bell, Jones, Johnson, Furuya, Renwick and Hutchinson each recorded one. Jones picked up the victory in the circle with her 10th complete-game effort of the year, allowing two earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts. Purdue's Lilly Fecho (8-13) was dealt the loss, giving up five runs in 4.2 innings of work. RECAP
Game 2: Penn State scored first, but the Boilermakers mounted an offense barrage to the tune of 12 runs on nine hits in a 12-3 win in Game 2 of the doubleheader. Junior Andie Varsho, senior Maia Monchek and freshman Paris Andrew added two hits apiece to lead the Boiler bats, while sophomore Lexy Moore (8-9) got it done in the circle, striking out four and giving up just one earned run in the complete-game victory. Macy Jones (10-12) took the loss as neither she nor reliever Marissa Diescher could hold off the Purdue bats. RECAP

The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan softball team outlasted Indiana and a one-hour rain delay to come up with three ninth-inning runs to win, 7-4, today at Andy Mohr Field. Game two of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled due to severe weather. Junior Lyndsay Doyle led off the top of the ninth with a scalding single up the middle. Then a heavy downpour caused the umpires to suspend the game for an hour. Once the rain delay ended, U-M plated three runs to take the lead. Doyle scored on a single from freshman Sierra Romero, and then junior Nicole Sappingfield, who reached on an IU error, came around to score two pitches later on a knock from junior Caitlin Blanchard. The Maize and Blue capped the scoring on a base hit from freshman Sierra Lawrence, her third hit of the game. RECAP

Nebraska 3, Minnesota 2 (Game 1); Nebraska 4, Minnesota 0 (Game 2)
Game 1: The 18th-ranked Nebraska softball team rallied from a two-run deficit to defeat Minnesota, 3-2, in the first game of a Wednesday doubleheader. Junior Taylor Edwards led the comeback, doubling and scoring in the third and tying the game with her 10th home run of the year in the fifth. Edwards finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI, while sophomore Mattie Fowler was 3-for-3. RECAP
Game 2: Tatum Edwards tossed a three-hit shutout and hit a grand slam to help the 18th-ranked Nebraska softball team complete a doubleheader sweep of Minnesota with a 4-0 victory in game two. Edwards' efforts in the circle and at the plate helped Nebraska move into second place in the Big Ten Conference standings. The Huskers improved to 32-9 and 10-3 in league play with the sweep after entering the doubleheader one-half game behind Minnesota. RECAP

Five Programs Receiving Votes in Latest National Polls

For the second straight week, five Big Ten teams are receiving votes in the latest polls released by USA Softball and the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Michigan climbs into the top 10 in both polls for the first time this season, appearing at No. 9. Nebraska remains at No. 18 in the USA Softball standings and climbs one spot to No. 21 in the NFCA poll this week. Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin are among teams also receiving votes in both rankings this week.
