Illinois' Jenna Smith, Michigan State's Allyssa DeHaan and Penn State's Tyra Grant were named candidates for the 2009-10 Lowes Senior CLASS Award. Student-Athletes eligible for the award must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - classroom, character, community and competition. Three Big Ten teams are ranked in the ESPN/USA Today Division I Top 25 Coaches' Poll, the WBCA announced today. Ohio State leads the conference at No. 3, followed by No. 10 Michigan State and No. 23 Purdue. In addition, two more conference squads are receiving votes outside the top 25. FULL POLL

Former Iowa standout Tangela Smith recorded six points, eight rebounds and two assists to help the Phoenix Mercury claim the 2009 WNBA Championship over the Indiana Fever on Friday. Katie Douglas (Purdue) had 14 points, nine assists and four boards, while Jessica Davenport (Ohio State) tallied 18 points, two rebounds and an assist for the Fever.

Katie Douglas (Purdue) of the Indiana Fever led all players with 30 points, while Tangela Smith (Iowa) had 14 points and five rebounds for the Phoenix Mercury, who emerged with a 120-116 overtime win in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals last night, marking the highest-scoring game in league history. Headed to the Hall September 10, 2009
Former Iowa head women's basketball coach C. Vivian Stringer will be enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Friday. Stringer coached at Iowa from 1983-95, collecting a 269-84 record while guiding the Hawkeyes to nine NCAA Tournament appearances in 12 seasons. FULL STORY

Big Ten Places Five on Wooden Preseason List August 20, 2009
The Big Ten leads all conferences with five players on the 2009-10 John R. Wooden Award Women's Preseason Top 30 List.
Candidates from the Big Ten are Illinois senior Jenna Smith, Michigan State senior Allyssa DeHaan, Ohio State junior Jantel Lavender and sophomore Samantha Prahalis and Penn State senior Tyra Grant.
Ohio State is one of just four schools with multiple players on the list, and Prahalis is the only sophomore to make the cut. Lavender was also a preseason honoree last season.
