Four Big Ten Teams Appear in Final Polls

A total of four Big Ten teams appear in the final and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls for the 2013-14 season, released on Monday. After its national runner-up finish, Minnesota checks in at No. 2 in both polls.The Gophers were the No. 1 team in at least one poll for 20 weeks this season and were never ranked lower than No. 5, including 24 consecutive weeks in the top two. Minnesota concluded the season with a record of 28-7-6.

Big Ten Tournament Champion Wisconsin checks in at No. 7 in both polls after finishing the season with a record of 24-11-2. Michigan follows at No. 16 in the poll while Ohio State rounds out the Big Ten contingent at No. 20 in the poll. The Wolverines also received votes in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll.

2014 Men's Gymnastics Season in Review

The Big Ten men's gymnastics season came to a close at the NCAA Championships, where Michigan won the team crown and three out of six individual titles were claimed by conference student-athletes.

NCAA Champions: The Michigan men's gymnastics team claimed the 2014 NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championship at the University of Michigan's Crisler Center during the first session of the NCAA Championships. This is the Wolverines' second consecutive national championship and their sixth program title, including three in the past five years. The Big Ten has now claimed four titles in the past five years. After recording 445.050 points, Michigan defeated second-place Oklahoma (441.650) and third-place Stanford (436.300). Illinois finished fourth with 435.350 points, Ohio State placed fifth with 433.500 points and Penn State took sixth with 429.800 points. All-Around Athletes: Wolverine Sam Mikulak won his third all-around crown at the University of Michigan's Crisler Center during the NCAA Championships. In the all-around, Mikulak placed first on the floor exercise (16.050), parallel bars (16.050) and vault (15.300) and tied for first on the pommel horse (15.600). Mikulak becomes the first Big Ten men's gymnast to win the all-around title three times since Minnesota's John Roethlisberger accomplished the feat from 1991-93. NCAA Individual Success: Three Big Ten men's gymnasts won individual national titles on the final day of the 2014 NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships. Illinois' Jordan Valdez won the high bar competition with a score of 15.525, marking the first Fighting Illini to win the award since Paul Ruggeri in 2008-09. After winning the all-around crown, Mikulak took home the parallel bars title for the second consecutive season with a score of 15.875. Minnesota's Ellis Mannon took home the pommel horse title after scoring 15.425 points, becoming the first Gopher to claim the pommel horse crown since Clay Strother in 2001-02. Wolverine Winners: The Michigan men's gymnastics team captured the 2014 Big Ten Championship at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln, Neb. The title marks the Wolverines' second consecutive crown and 17th overall. Mikulak was the Big Ten all-around champion after finishing with a score of 93.700 points, claiming his third Big Ten all-around crown and becoming the first conference gymnast to win three all-around titles since Ohio State's Blaine Wilson won three straight from 1995-97. All the Awards: Following the Big Ten Championships, Michigan's Sam Mikulak was named the Big Ten Gymnast of the Year for the third time, becoming the first conference gymnast to earn the honor three times since Ohio State's Blaine Wilson earned the accolade from 1995-97. Ohio State's Melton was tabbed the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, while Michigan's Kurt Golder was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year for the second straight season. Mikulak and Melton were joined on the All-Big Ten first team by Illinois' Chandler Eggleston and C.J. Maestas, Minnesota's Ellis Mannon, Ohio State's Jake Martin and Penn State's Trevor Howard. Academic Success: The Big Ten Conference recognized a total of 678 winter sports student-athletes who have been named to the Academic All-Conference team, which included 51 men's gymnasts. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners who are in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher. The list of gymnasts included 32 repeat winners, including three-time and four-time honorees Cameron Rogers, Cole Smith and Alex Varga of Illinois, Matt McGrath of Iowa, Syque Caesar, Kevin Fraser, Matt Freeman, Dylan James and AJ Schottstaedt of Michigan, Nathan Fortunato, Adam Kern and John Scallon of Minnesota, Donovan Arndt, Mark Ringle and Eric Schryver of Nebraska, Misha Koudinov and Michael Newburger of Ohio State and Adrian Evans, Preston Gall and Ingvar Jochumsson of Penn State. Minnesota Falls in National Championship Game

Justin Kloos, Sam Warning, Taylor Cammarata and Hudson Fasching all scored for Minnesota while goalie Adam Wilcox stopped 41 shots, but it was not enough as the Gophers fell to Union 7-4 Saturday night in the NCAA championship game at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. Minnesota finished as the national runner-up for the seventh time in program history.

Six Big Ten Hockey Standouts Named All-Americans

Six Big Ten hockey standouts from three conference schools were named CCM Hockey All-Americans for the 2013-14 season tonight at the NCAA Men's Division I Frozen Four in Philadelphia, Pa. Minnesota led all Big Ten programs with three All-Americans followed by Wisconsin with two and Ohio State with one.

Three conference players earned spots on the first team, including Minnesota sophomore defenseman Mike Reilly, Ohio State junior forward Ryan Dzingel and Wisconsin junior defenseman Jake McCabe.

An additional three Big Ten players claimed spots on the second team, including Minnesota teammates Kyle Rau (junior, forward) and Adam Wilcox (sophomore, goalie) and Wisconsin senior forward Michael Mersch.

Minnesota Advances to National Championship Game

Senior defenseman Justin Holl scored his first goal of the season with less than one second remaining in regulation to lead top-seeded Minnesota to a 2-1 victory over North Dakota Thursday night at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pa. With the win, the Gophers clinched a spot in Saturday's national championship game against Union. Faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Michigan's Mikulak Wins Nissen Emery Award

University of Michigan men's gymnast Sam Mikulak has been named the 2014 recipient of the prestigious Nissen Emery Award, given annually to the NCAA's top male gymnast. He becomes the first Wolverine gymnast to win the honor since Justin Toman in 2002. Mikulak owns 13 NCAA All-America citations as well as five NCAA titles, two off the NCAA record held by current Nebraska assistant coach Jim Hartung. Mikulak is a three-time Big Ten Gymnast of the Year and three-time Big Ten all-around champion. Currently, he owns the NCAA all-around record (93.70) as well as the NCAA parallel bar record (16.10).

The Nissen Emery Award honors the collegiate senior male gymnast who has not only established an outstanding record of achievement during his college career but also an athlete who has demonstrated good sportsmanship, fair play and a high standard of athletic excellence. Three Big Ten Teams Finish in Top-10 of Coaches Poll

The final men's college basketball USA Today Coaches top 25 poll was released on Wednesday, and the Big Ten was represented with three teams among the top-10. Wisconsin finished the season ranked No. 4 in the poll, followed by No. 6 Michigan and No. 8 Michigan State. Ohio State and Minnesota also received votes in the final ballot.

Wisconsin advanced to the Final Four for the first time since 2000 and ended its season with 30 wins, tied for the second-most in school history. Michigan won its first outright Big Ten Championship since 1986, and Michigan State claimed its second Big Ten Tournament title in the past three seasons. The Badgers, Wolverines and Spartans all made regional final appearances, marking the third time in the last 15 years that three conference teams advanced to the Elite Eight.

Ohio State made its sixth straight NCAA Tournament appearance, dropping a heartbreaking decision versus eventual Elite Eight participant Dayton in the second round. Minnesota captured the NIT Championship, the second in school history, and won a school-record 25 games. 

Four Big Ten women's basketball squads were ranked in the final USA Today Coaches Poll of the 2013-14 season, released on Wednesday. Penn State led the list of ranked conference teams, coming in at No. 14. Nebraska checked in at No. 17, followed by No. 19 Purdue and No. 23 Michigan State. Iowa was receiving votes in the poll.
