WRES: In the Polls

Eight Big Ten wrestling teams appear in the latest NWCA/USA Today Coaches Poll, highlighted by top-ranked Penn State. The Nittany Lions became the unanimous choice for No. 1 in the country after moving to 13-0 over the weekend. Wisconsin also moved up in the poll, checking in at No. 3. Minnesota follows at No. 4, while Iowa maintains its top-10 status at No. 8. Michigan falls two spots to No. 13 in this week's poll, followed by Illinois at No. 14. Northwestern checks in at No. 18 and Purdue holds No. 24 to round out the ranked conference teams.

After spending a week tied for first, Penn State also takes over the No. 1 spot in the InterMat Tournament Rankings. Wisconsin is tied for No. 4, while Minnesota holds No. 6. Iowa checks in at No. 11, followed by No. 12 Michigan, No. 14 Northwestern, No. 19 Illinois and No. 20 Indiana. Purdue holds No. 34 in the latest rankings, followed by No. 37 Ohio State and No. 53 Michigan State.

Penn State's Cameron Wade earns Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honors for the first time in his career after defeating two ranked wrestlers over the weekend to help the No. 2 Nittany Lions remain undefeated.

WRES: Ranking the Wrestlers, Part Two

The first of three 2010-11 NCAA wrestling coaches' panel rankings was released on Thursday, with 76 Big Ten grapplers earning top-33 status in their respective weight classes. The final edition of the rankings will be used as a tool to determine the qualifiers for the 2011 NCAA Wrestling Championships.

The Big Ten's 76 ranked wrestlers leads all conferences, with the second-highest total belonging to the EIWA with 53. All 11 conference squads have at least five ranked wrestlers, with Michigan, Minnesota and Penn State boasting nine each. Northwestern's Brandon Precin leads the way at 125 pounds, while Michigan's Kellen Russell also holds No. 1 at 141 pounds.

Fifty-three Big Ten wrestlers are ranked in the InterMat individual top 20 rankings this week, with at least one wrestler from each conference team making an appearance. Northwestern 125-pounder Brandon Precin and Michigan 141-pounder Kellen Russell again lead their respective weight classes in the latest edition. Eight Big Ten wrestling teams have earned top-25 status in the latest NWCA/USA Today Coaches Poll, led by Penn State at No. 2 for the third consecutive week. Wisconsin sits at No. 4 with Minnesota following at No. 5. Eighth-ranked Iowa climbs two spots from last week's poll, while Michigan holds No. 11 for the second-straight week. Illinois also maintains its ranking from last week, checking in at No. 15. Northwestern moves up three spots to No. 19, while Purdue rounds out the group of ranked conference teams at No. 23. Indiana and Ohio State are each receiving votes in the latest poll.

Penn State also leads the way in the InterMat Tournament Rankings, moving into a tie for No. 1 with Cornell. Wisconsin and Minnesota again check in at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively, while Iowa sits at No. 10. Northwestern jumps to No. 12 in the latest rankings, followed by No. 13 Michigan, No. 18 Illinois and No. 20 Indiana. Ohio State ranks 37th in this week's edition, while Purdue holds No. 39 and Michigan State sits at No. 56.

WRES: Michigan's Zeerip Named Wrestler of the Week

Michigan 157-pounder Brandon Zeerip has been named the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week, the conference office announced on Tuesday. Zeerip won both of his bouts over the weekend to push the 11th-ranked Wolverines to wins over No. 21 Purdue on Friday and No. 20 Central Michigan on Sunday.
