WINDR T/F: Indoor Season to Begin This Weekend

The 2011 Big Ten women's indoor track and field schedule beings this weekend with six teams competing.

On Friday, Ohio State leads off the first leg of the weekend competition, playing host to the Buckeye Classic for the second consecutive year. The invitational events are set to begin at 6 p.m. ET.

The following day, Michigan makes its 2011 debut when it travels to Ypsilanti, Mich., for the Eastern Michigan University Invitational at Bob Parks Track, while Indiana hosts the Indiana Open at Gladstein Fieldhouse.Three other Big Ten teams will open their 2011 action at home as Minnesota, Penn State and Purdue prepare to host competition on Saturday. The Golden Gophers play host to the Northwestern Open, while the 2010 Big Ten Indoor Champion Nittany Lions compete in the Penn State Relays. The Boilermakers begin their indoor slate hosting the Purdue Invitational with competition to start at 11 a.m. ET.

Illinois, Iowa, Michigan State and Wisconsin are set to open their indoor campaigns the following weekend. On Friday, Wisconsin begins action it hosts the two-day Badger Track Classic, while Michigan State travels to Lexington, Ky., for the Kentucky Invitational. The following day, the Illini start their season hosting the Illini Open, while the Hawkeyes begin their indoor season by welcoming competitors to the Iowa Open at the Iowa Recreation Building.

WINDR T/F: Illinois' Angela Bizzarri Captures NCAA Title

Penn State led all Big Ten teams as competition came to a close at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships at Randal Tyson Tracak Center on the campus of the University of Arkansas on Saturday. The Nittany Lions tallied 17 team points to finish in 13th place, marking their third-consecutive top-15 finish at the national event. Rounding out the Big Ten contingent was Illinois (10) and Indiana (8) in 21st and 28th place, respectively.

Illinois senior Angela Bizzarri  claimed top honors  in the 3,000-meter run. The Mason, Ohio native smashed her own school record in the event by 13 seconds with a time of 8:57.40 and edged top-seeded Lisa Koll (8:57.52) of Iowa State by just over a tenth of a second.

Oregon earned the NCAA team crown with 61 points, followed by Tennessee with 36, LSU with 35, Florida with 33, and Texas A&M with 31.

WINDR T/F: Big Ten Announces Individual Honors

The Big Ten Conference office announced on Tuesday the 2010 All-Big Ten women's indoor track and field teams and individual award winners. Highlighting the list, Penn State junior Shavon Greaves was named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Year and Minnesota senior Alicia Rue earned the nod as Field Athlete of the Year. Michigan's Jillian Smith was tabbed Freshman of the Year by the conference coaches while Nittany Lion head coach Beth Alford-Sullivan was named Coach of the Year by her peers. In addition, Nittany Lion senior Bridget Franek was tabbed Big Ten Track Athlete of the Championships while seniors  Aja Evans of Illinois and Faith Sherrill of Indiana took home Field Co-Athletes of the Championships laurels for their outstanding performances over the weekend.

WINDR T/F: Penn State Captures Big Ten Indoor Title

Penn State captured its second-ever Big Ten Indoor Championship in front of a home crowd at Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track on Saturday afternoon. The Championships host posted four Big Ten titles and two runner-up finishes on the final day of competition to total 111 points for its first team title since 2004.

Ohio State placed second with 88 points, followed by Indiana (83) and Minnesota (83) in third and fourth place, respectively. Wisconsin improved upon its seventh-place finish from last year's meet, rounding out the top-five spots with 72 tallies.

WINDR T/F: Minnesota Begins Defense of Big Ten Indoor Title

With six events in the books, Minnesota surged to an early lead after the first day of competition at the 2010 Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championships in University Park, Pa. The Golden Gophers began their defense of the conference crown with four top-three finishes, including one individual title to compile 41 team points. Illinois collected 37 points on the strength of two individual top finishes to edge Purdue (36) for the runner-up spot after Day One.

Wisconsin (34) and Indiana (22) currently occupy the remaining top-five positions with one individual conference title apiece.  

Championships host Penn State finished the opening day of competition in sixth with 21 points. With runners in every track final but one Sunday, the Nittany Lions have poised themselves to make a run at the program's second-ever Big Ten Indoor title. READ MORE ...

WINDR T/F: Penn State to Host Big Ten Championships

Penn State University and Ashenfelter Multi-Sport Facility is set to host the 2010 Big Ten Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships, slated for Saturday, Feb. 27 - Sunday, Feb. 28. The Nittany Lions lead the conference in the latest USTFCCCA poll with a No. 10 national ranking. Indiana is the only other Big Ten representative to appear on that list, apearing at No. 19. Minnesota is the three-time defending Big Ten Champions, but will face stiff competition from some of the best track and field athletes in the country as the Big Ten is home to five of the nation's top-five event times and marks. WINDR T/F: USTFCCCA National Rankings

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Tuesday the fifth weekly update of the NCAA Division I National Team Rankings for indoor track & field. Penn State's position in the poll remained unchanged at No. 10 while Indiana fell one spot to earn a No. 19 national ranking. Up next, all 10 conference teams will convene in University Park, Pa. for the Big Ten Indoor Championships, slated for Feb. 27-28.

WINDR T/F: Big Ten Announces Weekly Indoor Honorees

The conference office announced on Monday the seventh weekly women's indoor track and field awards for meets through February 15-21. Ohio State's Letecia Wright and Purdue's Briana Neumann received the nod for Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for their efforts in the final tune up before the Big Ten Championships last week.  READ MORE ...

WINDR T/F: Weekly Rankings

Once again, Indiana and Penn State appeared as the conference's lone representatives in fourth edition of the women's indoor track and field USTFCCCA national rankings, announced Monday afternoon.  The Nittany Lions voted in at No. 10 while the Hoosiers moved up seven spots to earn a No. 18 ranking in this week's poll.

WINDR T/F: Weekly Honorees

The conference office announced on Monday the sixth weekly women's indoor track and field awards for meets through February 8-14. Penn State's Bridget Franek and Minnesota's Alicia Rue posted NCAA automatic qualifying marks last week to earn the weekly laurels.

Franek placed third in the highly-touted 5,000-meter invitational at the Husky Classic, finishing in a personal-best 15:56.76 - just over three seconds off the Penn State school record. Her performance is the fourth fastest in the NCAA this year, and the best mark among Big Ten competitors.

Meanwhile, Rue placed second in the pole vault competition at the Iowa State Classic with a leap of 14 feet, 3.25 inches - her fourth NCAA automatic qualifier on the year. The meet marked her eighth clearance over 14 feet this season.
