Penn State's Matt Brown has been named an NCAA Elite 89 Award recipient, presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's 88 championships, it was announced on Tuesday. The Elite 89 recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individuals who have reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. Third Times a Charm: Penn State won its third NCAA Wrestling
Championships title in as many seasons after picking up two individual
weight class titles. The Nittany Lions totaled 123.5 team points en route to
the national title, while third-place Minnesota and fourth-place Iowa
finished in the top five with 103 and 73 points, respectively. The Nittany Lions' Ed Ruth (184 pounds) and
Quentin Wright (197) each won titles to push Penn State to the national
crown, while Illinois' Jesse Delgado (125), Ohio State's Logan Stieber
(133), Iowa's Derek St. John (157) and Minnesota's Tony Nelson (285)
also won national championships on Saturday to give the Big Ten six of
the 10 individual champions. PENN STATE RECAPAll-America Awards: Over a third of the All-America honors awarded at the NCAA Championships
were given to Big Ten wrestlers, as the conference grapplers earned 29 of the
80 accolades. Minnesota led the way with eight wrestlers who were tabbed
All-Americans after placing in the top eight in their respective weight
classes, followed by Penn State with five and Iowa with four. Illinois and Ohio State

Penn State Claims Third Consecutive Big Ten Championship: Penn State won its third straight Big Ten Wrestling Championships title, claiming first place with a score of 151. The Nittany Lions
claimed four individual titles en route to the conference championship.
Minnesota finished in second place with 139 points, while Iowa took
third with 133.5. Fourth-place Ohio State (109.5 points) and fifth-place

conference's individual award winners, were announced following the conclusion
of the Big Ten Championships. Penn State's Ed Ruth was named the Big Ten
Wrestler of the Year, while Nittany Lion head
coach Cael Sanderson and Minnesota's J Robinson shared Coach of the Year honors. Wisconsin's Connor Medbery was named Big Ten
Freshman of the Year, while Illinois' Jesse Delgado was named Wrestler of the Championships. Earning spots on the

The NCAA announced its qualifier allocations for the 2013 Wrestling Championships on Thursday, with the Big Ten matching a conference record and receiving the most of any conference with 74. The Big Ten will send at least six automatic qualifiers in all 10 weight classes, including nine automatic bids at heavyweight, and boasts the highest amount of qualifiers of any conference in each class. The automatic bids will determine 290 of the 330 qualifiers for the NCAA Championships, while the remaining 40 slots will be filled by four at-large selections in each class. The final coaches' panel and RPI rankings were also released on Thursday, with 86 grapplers appearing in the top 33 of their weight class. Five Big Ten wrestlers hold the top coaches' panel ranking in their class, as Ohio State's Logan Stieber (133 pounds), Northwestern's Jason Welch (157), Minnesota's Logan Storley (174), Penn State's Ed Ruth (184) and Minnesota's Tony Nelson (HWT) each close the regular season as the top-ranked wrestlers in the country. The conference also boasts 74 wrestlers in the top 33 of their respective classes in the second and final edition of the RPI rankings, with five taking the top spots. Ohio State's Stieber (133), Penn State's Dylan Alton (157) and David Taylor (165), Minnesota's Kevin Steinhaus (184) and Nelson (HWT) each hold No. 1 RPI rankings to close the regular season.
