Big Ten Represented At 2018 Winter Olympics

Feb. 5, 2018

  • 2018 Winter Olympics Schedule
  • All-Time Big Ten Olympians

The 2018 Winter Olympics open this week and the Big Ten will be represented by more than 40 individuals in PyeongChang, South Korea from February 7-25. Seven Big Ten schools will have participants including 35 competitors along with 10 coaches, officials or administrators. Minnesota and Wisconsin each have 11 competitors in action.

The Big Ten contingent of current and former students, coaches and alumni includes 20 members of Team USA and nine members of Team Canada while China, Finland, Korea, Nigeria, South Korea and Sweden are also represented.

Three individuals are current students at Big Ten institutions: Team USA speedskater Thomas Hong at Maryland, U.S women's hockey forward Kelly Pannek at Minnesota and Team Canada hockey forward Emily Clark at Wisconsin.

Fifteen of the competitors are returning to the Olympics led by two-time gold medalist Meaghan Mikkelson of the Canadian women's hockey team, who played at Wisconsin. The 15 have combined to win 14 medals.

Nine Olympians will be playing men's ice hockey and 20 will compete in women's ice hockey.

The head coaches of both U.S hockey teams are Big Ten alums with current Wisconsin coach Tony Granato leading the men and Minnesota graduate Robb Stauber leading the women's squad. Assistant coaches for both U.S. hockey teams also have Big Ten ties with former Badger Chris Chelios assisting Granato and former Gopher Brett Strot working with Stauber.

Jim Johannson, who played his college hockey at Wisconsin, served as the general manager of the U.S. men's hockey team until he passed away just weeks prior to the Olympics on Jan. 21, 2018.

Fraser McIntyre, who serves as a linesman for Big Ten hockey games, will be working in the same capacity for men's ice hockey games at the Olympics. Michigan State alum Tim Mayer, who officiates in the American Hockey League, will serve as a referee at the Games.

Other sports with Big Ten competitors include bobsled, curling, figure skating and speedskating. Big Ten students and coaches have been a part of the Olympic experience on more than 1,500 occasions, including many making multiple trips to the international event. That list of conference standouts has accumulated more than 600 medals, including nearly 300 gold. Former medalists include Ohio State track star Jesse Owens, who won four gold medals at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, and former Indiana swimmer Mark Spitz, who won four medals, including two golds, in the 1968 Games before claiming seven gold medals during the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. The Winter Games have also been rewarding, as 12 members of the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" United States hockey team competed at Minnesota and Wisconsin.
