Through Friday, the Big Ten will highlight each of the 22 student-athletes nominated for the conference’s Jesse Owens Male and Suzy Favor Female Athlete of the Year Awards. Award winners are voted on by a pre-selected media panel and will be announced live on the Big Ten Network’s season-ending awards show on Monday at 6:30 p.m. CT.
SHANNON SMITH – NORTHWESTERN – LACROSSE
Smith led Northwestern to its sixth national championship in seven years in 2011, scoring game-winning goals in the national semifinals and final en route to NCAA Championship MVP honors. Winner of both major national player of the year awards -- the Tewaaraton Trophy and the Lacrosse Honda Sports Award, Smith led Division I with 128 points, the second-best single-season total in NU history and seventh-most all-time in Division I history.
