In men’s basketball, Illinois alum Deron Williams netted 10 points in team USA’s 116-85 win over Australia. Former Buckeye Michael Redd chipped in five points in only eight minutes of play.
Kayla Bashore, formerly of Indiana, had a shot on goal for the United States women’s field hockey team. Spain eventually defeated team USA in overtime by a score of 3-2.
In the first set of heats of the men’s 5,000-meter run, former Wisconsin student-athlete Matt Tegenkamp won his heat with a time of 13:37.36 as he moves on to the next round. Ex-Michigan runner Kevin Sullivan placed 11th in his heat, clocking a 14:09.16.
