Unstoppable Forces, a Historic Opening & a West Coast Shootout

Top-15 clash in Iowa City, grand opening in Evanston, QB duel in LA

Week 4 delivered last-second touchdowns, comeback wins and incredible individual performances. This week, the foot stays on the gas, headlined by a top-15 showdown at Kinnick Stadium.

Top-15 Heavyweights in Iowa City

Kinnick Stadium takes center stage as No. 14 Iowa hosts No. 5 Ohio State for the first time since the Hawkeyes' unforgettable 55-24 win in 2017. Nine years later, both programs enter with momentum: Reece Vander Zee’s walk-off touchdown helped Iowa sink then-No. 18 Michigan, while the Buckeyes were fueled by Jeremiah Smith’s historic 217-yard, 4-touchdown explosion against Illinois.

“Great to be in Kinnick on Saturday,” Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said. “We’ll have a great crowd out there... a lot of interest and excitement in town ... It's going to take basically a perfect game."

It will be an unstoppable force vs. an immovable object when the Ohio State offense (sixth in the country with 45 points per game) goes against the No. 1 scoring defense in the country; Iowa has allowed eight points per game while holding opponents to just under 240 yards per game.

Eyes will be on Smith — who leads the nation with 617 receiving yards and seven TDs — against an Iowa secondary headlined by Deshaun Lee (two interceptions in 2026) and All-Big Ten safety Zach Lutmer. If Iowa locks down No. 4, quarterback Julian Sayin must rely on secondary weapons like wide receivers Brandon Inniss and Devin McCuin or running backs Bo and Ja’Kobi Jackson.

"This is a big opportunity for our team,” Day said. “To go into a tough road environment against a very good team and go get a win. That certainly would build a lot of momentum for our season moving forward.”

A New Era Begins: Northwestern Opens New Ryan Field vs. Penn State

The Northwestern Wildcats kick off a major chapter Friday night, hosting Penn State in the grand opening of Ryan Field.

Both teams enter hungry for their first conference victory after tight Big Ten losses. Northwestern pushed defending champion Indiana to the wire, while Penn State dropped a one-possession battle to Wisconsin.

The quarterback duel takes center stage: Northwestern’s Aidan Chiles (807 passing yards, 10 total TDs, no turnovers) faces a stingy Penn State defense (11.5 PPG allowed), while Nittany Lions QB Rocco Becht (9-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio) seeks a bounce-back performance.

Friday night will be a landmark moment for Northwestern, but on the field, it remains a critical Big Ten matchup.

USC Hosts Washington at the L.A. Coliseum

A West Coast rivalry is renewed when Washington faces No. 18 USC in a game packed with explosive offenses. The last time these teams faced off in Los Angeles, quarterbacks Michael Penix Jr. and Caleb Williams led units that combined for over 1,000 total yards in a Huskies’ win.

We will once again see two of the Big Ten’s best signal callers in Jayden Maiava and Demond Williams Jr. Maiava leads the nation with 1,499 passing yards and 14 touchdowns, while Williams has 1,129 yards through the air (fourth in the Big Ten), along with 165 yards on the ground, and nine total touchdowns.

Both secondaries face a trial by fire against top-five conference passing attacks. USC’s Prophet Brown and Washington’s Alex McLaughlin (two interceptions each) lead defensive backs tasked with slowing down two of the Big Ten's most electric aerial games.

In a high-scoring environment where points come fast, a single game-changing takeaway could decide who leaves with a win.

More Games on the Slate

  • After winning its conference opener out west, Minnesota returns home to play Michigan. The Wolverines are looking to get back into the win column after the heartbreaking loss to Iowa.

  • After erasing a 17-point deficit at Penn State, Wisconsin hosts Michigan State. The Spartans face life without injured RB Cam Edwards, while Badgers playmaker Colton Joseph rides momentum from his two-TD performance.
