NEW YORK - Brent Gates scored with 3:29 left in regulation to lift the Minnesota Golden Gophers (15-12-1, 6-9-1-1 Big Ten) to a 2-1 win in the nightcap of Super Saturday at Madison Square Garden. The third annual "Super Saturday - College Hoops & Hockey" doubleheader will be held on Saturday, Jan. 20 at Madison Square Garden. Ohio State defeated Minnesota in men's basketball, 67-49, and the Gophers will take on Michigan State in hockey on Saturday night.

The 2017 Super Saturday saw a pair of dramatic finishes as Wisconsin defeated Rutgers in overtime, 61-54, in men's basketball and the Badgers' hockey squad beat Ohio State, also in overtime, in the night cap, 3-2.

The inaugural event in 2016 featured Penn State versus Michigan in both men's basketball and hockey. More than 25,000 fans attended the doubleheader. Michigan posted a 79-72 win on the hardwood, and a 6-3 victory in hockey.

The doubleheader features conference competition on an annual basis in late January or early February, with nine different Big Ten institutions competing in men's basketball and/or hockey from 2016-19.

In 2019, Maryland will face Illinois in men's basketball. The 2019 hockey matchup will be announced at a later date.

In Dec. 2014, the Big Ten announced an extensive agreement with Madison Square Garden to feature the Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament in New York City for the first time in 2018, along with men's basketball and hockey doubleheaders from 2016 through 2019 and a significant branding presence both inside and outside the building.
