Big Ten Baseball Season Begins This Weekend

The Big Ten baseball season gets underway this weekend as Northwestern travels to Lubbock, Texas, for two games against Texas Tech and a pair vs. Western Illinois, Feb. 9-11.

The non-conference slate continues Feb. 16-18 as Penn State kicks off its schedule in Shreveport, La., with two games against Centenary and another two with Kansas State.

Big Ten baseball gets into full swing the weekend of Feb. 23-25 as the remaining eight teams travel south for their season-openers.

Two teams, Michigan and Ohio State, will begin their schedules in Major League Spring Training complexes with the Wolverines set to play a three-game series against Bethune-Cookman in Port St. Lucie, Fla., the Spring Training home of the New York Mets. The Buckeyes open at Legends Field in Tampa, Fla., the New York Yankees spring residence, with their own tournament, facing James Madison, Kansas State and Seton Hall.

Indiana and Michigan State will both open in the state of Alabama as the Hoosiers play single games against Troy, Southern Miss and Georgia Southern in Dothan, Ala. The Spartans will play in Mobile, Ala., at the Coca-Cola Classic where they will face South Alabama, Auburn and Jacksonville University.

Illinois and Purdue will both begin their non-conference schedules with three-game series as the Illini take on Louisiana-Lafayette and the Boilermakers will go up against Georgia, ranked No. 19 in the NCBWA preseason poll.

Last but not least, Minnesota will open its slate with three single games, playing UNC-Asheville, The Citadel and Virginia Tech in Charleston, S.C.

The Big Ten Conference schedule begins Friday, March 30, with Illinois at Purdue, Michigan State at Indiana, Iowa at Ohio State, Michigan at Northwestern and Minnesota at Penn State.
