Michigan State, Purdue and Indiana Earn Weekly Honors

Eckerle takes home Player of the Week honors after leading his team to a 2-1 record at the First Pitch Invitational in Greenville, S.C., over the weekend. The senior hit .727 (8-for-11) over three games, reaching base at a .750 clip and slugging .909 for an OPS of 1.659. The center fielder also went 4-for-4 on the base paths and scored a pair of runs. Eckerle leads the Big Ten in batting (.696), on-base percentage (.731) and hits (16) and helped the Spartans to their best six-game start to a season since 2002.

Angelo Cianfrocco, Purdue

Cianfrocco earns conference accolades after leading Purdue to a 3-1 series win at Morehead State over the weekend. The sophomore batted .625 (10-for-16), slugged 1.188 and racked up a .684 on-base percentage to combine for an OPS of 1.872. He also scored eight runs, two in each game, drove in five and stole a base. Cianfrocco tallied five extra-base hits in the series, including two home runs. The San Diego, Calif., native ranks among the Big Ten’s top three in batting average (.481), slugging (.852) and on-base percentage (.548) and is tied for the conference lead with 11 runs scored.

Wunderlich picks up Big Ten accolades after pitching six shutout innings in the Spartans’ 3-0 win over Charleston Southern at the First Pitch Invitational over the weekend. The senior allowed just two hits and a walk while striking out four batters to pick up his second win of the season and the 18th of his career, which is tied for sixth all-time at Michigan State. Wunderlich holds a season ERA of 0.69 and is allowing opposing batters to hit just .186.

Downing claims Freshman of the Week honors after helping Indiana to a 2-1 record at the Kleberg Bank Classic in Corpus Christi, Texas, including a 3-1 victory over nationally ranked Connecticut. The catcher batted .444 (4-for-9), including a 3-for-4 performance with a homer and two RBI in the tournament’s opener on Friday. He reached base at a .500 clip and slugged .778 for an OPS of 1.278. The Bowling Green, Ky., native also scored three runs over the weekend and went 1-for-1 with an RBI in the finale on Sunday.
