Michigan State, Penn State and Purdue Claim Weekly Baseball Awards

Holm is named Player of the Week after leading Michigan State to a 4-0 mark, improving the team’s record to 11-3. The senior batted .500, reached base at a .556 clip and slugged .563 for an OPS of 1.119. He also scored four runs and drove in eight over the four-game stretch. Holm closed out the week with back-to-back three-hit performances, going 3-for-3 with three RBI, a run and a stolen base in the Spartans’ 5-1 win against Akron on Saturday. He concluded his team’s spring trip by going 3-for-4 with three more RBI, a double and a run scored win a 7-4 victory over Pittsburgh.  On the season, the senior ranks among the Big Ten’s top 10 in batting average (.423), slugging (.596), on-base percentage (.492) and RBI (16).

Spillner takes home Player of the Week honors after leading Purdue to a 3-1 record last week, including a 6-4 win against nationally ranked Louisville on Tuesday. The junior batted .500 with a .556 on-base percentage and an .813 slugging percentage for an OPS of 1.369. He also scored seven runs and drove in four over four games. Spillner recorded two multi-hit games last week, including a 4-for-4 performance against Tennessee-Martin on Saturday. He hit two doubles, scored a pair of runs and racked up three RBI in the 8-7 win. On Sunday against UTM, he went 2-for-5 with an RBI and three runs, hitting his first home run of the season. Spillner ranks among the Big Ten’s best with 13 runs scored this season.

Walkling earns Pitcher of the Week accolades after a pair of dominant performances against Old Dominion and Norfolk State. The junior threw three scoreless innings in the Nittany Lions’ 6-1 win against the Monarchs on Tuesday, surrendering just two hits while striking out five. In Game 2 of a doubleheader with the Spartans on Sunday, the right-hander fanned a career-high 11 batters, allowing just a single in six shutout innings. Walkling flirted with a no-hitter, giving up his only base hit with one out in the sixth frame of a seven-inning game. With the performances, Walkling ranks second in the Big Ten with 22 strikeouts and is tied for second with a 1.10 ERA.

Garner picks up Freshman of the Week honors after earning the win in Michigan State’s 7-4 victory against Pittsburgh on Sunday. The right-hander worked 6.2 innings, giving up just one earned run on five hits while striking out seven. With the win, the Spartans improved to 11-3 on the year. The freshman has given up just two earned runs in 16.1 innings this season and holds an ERA of 1.10, which is tied for second in the Big Ten.
