Big Ten Medal of Honor 100th Anniversary Spotlight: Purdue’s Mel Garland
A three-time letterwinner in both baseball and basketball, Garland won the Big Ten Medal of Honor in 1964 after claiming Academic All-Big Ten honors, first-team All-Conference status in baseball and second-team designation in basketball. In 1979, Garland was named basketball coach and director of athletics at IUPUI, where he succumbed to leukemia in 1983. In his memory, the Mel Garland Memorial Scholarship is annually awarded to one IUPUI student-athlete based on the characteristics that embody Garland’s spirit: athletic ability, scholarship, mental attitude, leadership and perseverance.
Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota and Ohio State each won their opening Big Ten series last weekend and are atop the conference standings at 2-1. This week, 15 matchups will be streamed by BTDN or televised by BTN, including 11 conference matchups that will be available to a national audience. Numerous Big Ten teams and student-athletes rank among the NCAA’s statistical leaders. A listing can be found on the Big Ten Baseball Blog on bigten.org.
