Big Ten Baseball Weekly Release - March 27, 2012
Big Ten baseball continues with five conference series this weekend, including Big Ten openers for Michigan, Michigan State and Minnesota.
The Gophers host the Wolverines at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, while the Spartans welcome Ohio State. Elsewhere, Iowa heads to Indiana, Nebraska travels to Northwestern, Purdue welcomes Penn State, and Illinois hosts Mississippi Valley State in non-conference action.
Purdue continues to climb in the national polls, ranked as high as No. 19 this week by Baseball America, and is ranked 10th in the RPI according to boydsworld.com. Joining the Boilermakers in the RPI top 60 are No. 46 Ohio State, No. 54 Nebraska, No. 56 Illinois and No. 60 Michigan State.
Several Big Ten teams and players are also ranked among the NCAA’s statistical best, including Purdue, who leads the country with a .346 batting average and is seventh with 8.1 runs scored per game. Nebraska is ranked seventh in the nation in hitting (.329) and is fourth in scoring (8.4 runs per game). The Huskers and Boilermakers also rank seventh and eighth, respectively, with slugging percentages of .487 and .481. Michigan State leads the Big Ten on the mound, ranked 24th with a 2.82 ERA.
Individually, Purdue’s Cameron Perkins is 10th with 1.3 runs scored per game, while teammate Kevin Plawecki is third in doubles per game (.60) and is one of the five most difficult players to strike out. Nebraska’s Chad Christensen is sixth in RBI (33) and seventh in hits (42).
