Illinois used a five-run fourth and a seven-run sixth to run past Michigan State, 16-5, in Game 1 of the 2009 Big Ten Baseball Tournament at Huntington Park in Columbus, Ohio. Pete Cappetta and Josh Parr led the Illini attack with four hits each, while Cappetta drove in three runs and scored four and Parr scored once and plated four. Michigan State catcher Eric Roof got the Spartans on the board first with a grand slam in the third, marking the first grand slam in Huntington Park history. Phil Haig picked up the win, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts in seven innings. Nolan Moody was tagged with the loss, giving up seven runs on 10 hits and three walks with five Ks in 4.1 frames.

Big Ten Co-Pitcher of the Year Eric Arnett was masterful on the mound, throwing seven shutout innings for the Hoosiers, giving up just four hits and a walk while fanning 10. Arnett received support in the form of six teammates who registered double-digit hits in the game, including a three-hit performance by left-fielder Kipp Schutz. Schutz also scored two runs. Matt Bischoff took the loss, giving up five runs, four earned, on seven hits and a walk in four innings. Dan Black led the Boilermakers at the plate, going 2-for-4 with his second triple of the season.
