Big Ten Announces 2014 Baseball All-Conference Honors and Individual Award Winners
May 20, 2014
ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten on Tuesday announced the 2014 baseball All-Big Ten Teams and individual award winners, as voted by the conference’s coaches. Indiana’s Sam Travis was the unanimous choice for Player of the Year, teammate Joey DeNato garnered Pitcher of the Year accolades and Tracy Smith was tabbed Coach of the Year, while Ohio State’s Tanner Tully took home Freshman of the Year honors.
Travis is the second Indiana player to win the honor in the last five seasons, following Alex Dickerson in 2010. Overall, he is just the fourth Hoosier to win the award. Travis led the Big Ten in numerous statistical categories during the conference season, including runs scored (26), RBI (26), home runs (seven) and total bases (66). He also ranks second in hits (38) and sixth in batting average (.365). The junior was a unanimous selection to the All-Big Ten team.
DeNato gives Indiana its second straight Big Ten Pitcher of the Year accolade, following Aaron Slegers from a season ago, and its third in program history. The senior completed the conference season ranked first in wins (seven), third in strikeouts (41) and fourth in innings pitched (56.1) and earned run average (1.76). He served as the ace of a Hoosier staff that finished Big Ten play with a 1.53 ERA, the lowest staff average since Minnesota’s 0.99 ERA in 1966. DeNato was a unanimous choice to the All-Big Ten team.
Smith wins his second straight Coach of the Year award, claiming the third such honor in Indiana history. Indiana finished the season 21-3 in conference play, making their .875 Big Ten winning percentage the highest since Ohio State’s .893 percentage (25-3) in 1999. The Hoosiers, who are among the nation’s leaders in RPI, won their second straight conference title and are the top seed in this week’s Big Ten Tournament.
Tully is the second Buckeye in four seasons to be named Freshman of the Year, following teammate Josh Dezse in 2011. Overall, he is the 11th player in Ohio State annals to win the award. The freshman led the conference with 58.1 innings pitched and posted a 2.47 ERA during Big Ten play, while walking only four batters during the conference season. Tully was named a second-team All-Conference performer.
Travis and DeNato were joined by teammates Dustin DeMuth, (3B), Scott Donley (DH), Luke Harrison (RP), Brad Hartong (OF), Christian Morris (SP) and Kyle Schwarber (C) on the All-Big Ten first team. The Nebraska trio of Pat Kelly (2B), Michael Prichard (OF) and Chance Sinclair (SP) were also first-team honorees, as was Iowa’s Jake Yacinich (SS) and Michigan State’s Jimmy Pickens (OF).
The Big Ten also announced the Sportsmanship Award honorees from each institution. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These student-athletes must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
