Pitcher of the Week
Jake Toohey, Illinois
P, Sr., Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy
Toohey recorded a win and a save in two Illinois victories against Michigan State over the weekend. On Friday, the senior came in with two out in the eighth to preserve the victory before clinching the Illini's come-from-behind bid on Sunday. Needing a win to earn a trip to the Big Ten Tournament, Toohey held the Spartans scoreless through the last 4.1 innings as the Illini plated eight unanswered runs to take the lead. The right-hander recorded three timely strikeouts in the outing, including one with runners in scoring position and no outs in the sixth, and another to end the game. The senior also pitched two innings of perfect relief earlier in the week, striking out a pair against No. 17 Missouri on Tuesday. The award is the first of Toohey's career.
