Big Ten Baseball Tournament - Game 6 Blog
May 22, 2009 3:00 p.m.: It's a win for the Gophers and the first complete game of Tom Buske's career. The Gophers advance to play Illinois in about 40 minutes. Final stat lines: Minnesota scores 12 runs on 17 hits and one error with the Boilermakers scoring three from seven hits and three errors. Stay tuned for the next game, first pitch scheduled for 3:45. 2:55 p.m.: Tom Buske is back on the mound for the Gophers, going for his first complete game of the year, holding on to a 12-3 lead. 2:42 p.m.: Overmyer makes a snappy play at short to end the inning. The Boilermakers trail, 12-3 headed into their half of the eighth. 2:40 p.m.: A Purdue error pushes another Minnesota run across. McCallum up with runners on second and third and two outs, needing a triple for the cycle. 2:37 p.m.: Minnesota tacks on another to make it an 8-run contest in the eighth. 2:28 p.m.: Kevin Cahill takes the mound for the Boilermakers and will face Nick O'Shea to lead off the top of the eighth. 2:21 p.m.: Michael Kvasnicka yanks one to deep right-center for a two-run homer that bounces off the upper part of the scoreboard. 10-3 Minnesota as we stretch in Columbus. 2:17 p.m.: Petterson drops in another hit to drive in Nohelty from third, making it 8-3 Minnesota. 2:03 p.m.: Nick O'Shea drops a single into left to score McCallum, making it 7-3 as we head to the bottom of the sixth. 1:57 p.m.: Sean Collins in on relief to start the sixth inning. Kyle Knudson to lead it off for Minnesota, who holds a 6-3 lead. 1:37 p.m.: Connor Sestak is on to pitch for the Boilermakers and is greeted by an RBI double off the bat of Nohelty to make it 6-3. 1:32 p.m.: Eric Decker rips a triple to the deepest part of center to put Minnesota up 5-3 in the fifth. 1:21 p.m.: Morgan snags a screaming come-backer to end the inning. Still 4-3 Minnesota as we go to the bottom of the fourth. 1:19 p.m.: Derek McCallum puts the Gophers on top with a three-run homer over the mini-monster in right. 4-3 Minnesota. 1:17 p.m.: More fun - The Clippers are now the Triple-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. Who else is with the Indians organization? The only Big Ten player to be first-team All-Conference at two different positions in the same year, former Michigan standout Zach Putnam, currently with the AA Akron Aeros.
1:15 p.m.: Fun Fact - today's Big Ten Network analyst Scott Pose used to play here in Columbus as the member of the Clippers when the team was the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Yankees. 1:08 p.m.: John Cummins makes it a 3-1 game with a leadoff homer, but Buske gets the next three in order. 1:05 p.m.: Morgan works out of another bases-loaded jam with another strikeout. 12:54 p.m.: Second baseman Derek McCallum leads off the third with a double to the gap in right-center. 12:43 p.m.: Morgan catches Petterson looking to get out of the jam. Still 2-1 Purdue headed to the bottom of the inning. 12:41 p.m.: Morgan issues a walk to Nohelty to load the bases with two out. Petterson up to the plate. Petterson was ripping hits off the scoreboard in batting practice. 12:29 p.m.: Buske gets out of it with a double play as we head to the second. 12:28 p.m.: Charles delivers a single to center to give the Boilers a 2-1 lead. still just one out and the bases are full of Boilermakers. 12:26 p.m.: Buske walks Drew Madia to load the bases with one out and freshman Eric Charles up to bat. 12:23 p.m.: Dan Black has just tied the Big Ten's single-season record for walks with 62. 12:22 p.m.: Purdue gets on the board as a fielder's choice from John Cummins drives in Haveman. 12:21 p.m.: A leadoff double by Brandon Haveman and a fielding error give Purdue runners on the corners with no outs in the first. 12:17 p.m.: It's one run on two hits and one left on for the Gophers in the first. 12:12 p.m.: Minnesota second baseman Derek McCallum gives his team an early one-run lead with an RBI base hit to the middle of the infield. 12:10 p.m.: The senior DH extends the hit with a swipe of second and freshman shortstop AJ Petterson bunts him over to third. 12:09 p.m.: Matt Nohelty leads off the game with a base hit to right for Minnesota, and we're underway in Columbus! 11:56 a.m.: Check out the tournament stat leaders by clicking here. 11:47 p.m.: As we're about 20 minutes away from game time, something to watch for in today's first game ... Purdue's Dan Black is one walk away from tying the Big Ten's single season record, currently with 61 free passes on the year. 11:15 a.m.: Neither of today's starters has lost a decision in the month of May. Buske's last loss came to Illinois on April 18, while Morgan's last lost was to Minnesota on April 26. 11:03 a.m.: Just about an hour away from first pitch. Purdue is the home team and will throw Matt Morgan (6-4, 4.19 ERA), while Minnesota will counter with Tom Buske (8-3, 3.40 ERA). More interesting notes on these starters to follow… |
