Minnesota Selected to NCAA Championship

PARK RIDGE, Ill. – Minnesota was selected to the 2010 NCAA Baseball Championship, the NCAA Selection Committee announced on Monday. The Golden Gophers are the No. 4 seed in the Fullerton, Calif., Region, and will take on No. 1 Cal State Fullerton (41-15) on Friday, June 4. Minnesota will also have the chance to face Stanford (31-23) and New Mexico (37-20) who are the Nos. 2 and 3 seeds, respectively, in the double-elimination regional. The Golden Gophers earned the conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA Championship by sweeping through the Big Ten Tournament bracket, earning their conference-leading ninth tournament title. Minnesota entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed after winning the program’s 22nd Big Ten Championship. The NCAA Championship appearance is Minnesota’s 30th, which leads the Big Ten. It is also the program’s second consecutive and third in the last four years. The Gophers are 52-56 all-time in NCAA play and have won three national titles, the last of which came in 1964. The opening weekend of the NCAA Championship features 16-four-team regionals playing in a double-elimination format. Regional play runs from June 4-7, with the 16 winners advancing to super-regional play. The eight two-team Super Regional sites will be determined on Monday, June 7, with play scheduled to begin Friday, June 11, in a best-of-three series.
