Former Big Ten Baseball Players Win World Series
Nov. 5, 2009
Northwestern’s Joe Girardi and Ohio State’s Nick Swisher won the World Series with the New York Yankees on Wednesday night. Girardi managed the Yankees during their title run, while Swisher was the team’s starting right-fielder. The Yankees won the series, 4-2, over the Philadelphia Phillies, who claim another Big Ten alum – relief pitcher J.A. Happ from Northwestern. On Oct. 20, Happ was named Sporting News’ 2009 N.L. Rookie of the Year. He also won a World Series ring with the Phillies in 2008. The World Series title is the first for Swisher and the fourth for Girardi, who won three rings as a catcher with the Yankees in 1996, 1998 and 1999. Swisher is the third Buckeye to win a World Series and the first since Joe Sparma with the 1968 Detroit Tigers.
