GAME NOTES
The No. 6 seed improves to 7-1 in games against No. 11 seeds. The No. 6 seed is 1-1 in quarterfinal contests. Ohio State enters tomorrow's game vs. Wisconsin 3-2 in quarterfinal contests. The sixth seed is 3-3 in BTT quarterfinal games.
Ohio State improves to 1-1 against Penn State in Big Ten Tournament (BTT) games. The Nittany Lions previously defeated the Buckeyes (71-66) in the 2000 quarterfinals played in Indianapolis, IN.
Ohio State improves to 8-6 in Big Ten Tournament games, including a 3-2 mark in BTT contests at the United Center. The Buckeyes also improve to 2-2 in first round BTT games. This year marks the first time Ohio State is a No. 6 seed at a BTT. Penn State falls to 4-8 in BTT games, including 2-6 in first round contests. Penn State drops to 4-6 in BTT games at the United Center. The Nittany Lions finish their season on a 12-game losing skid.
Ohio State rallied from 15 points behind with 14:44 remaining in the second half to win the contest. The 15-point comeback matches the biggest comeback in BTT history. Iowa rallied from 15 back in the first half (33-18) to defeat Ohio State in the 2001 BTT quarterfinals. The Buckeyes avoided their second loss to a No. 11 seed in a BTT game. Ohio State trailed 52-41 at 10:28 and then went on an 18-2 run in 6:11 to claim a five point lead 59-54 with 4:17 left.
Today was the third meeting between the two schools this season, with Ohio State winning both regular season contests.
Ohio State won its 20th game tonight, becoming the sixth Big Ten squad to collect 20 wins or more. Buckeye Head Coach Thad Matta becomes the second head coach in Ohio State history to record a 20-win campaign in his first season on the job. Gary Williams was 20-13 in his first year in Columbus in 1987.
Penn State had an 11-point (35-24) halftime advantage. The Nittany Lions had trailed at the break in their last 23 contests against a Big Ten opponent dating back to the 2003-04 season. Penn State led 39-28 at the half vs. Texas A&M on January 2 in its last non-conference game. The Nittany Lions lost that game to the Aggies (62-60).
Ohio State led 3-1 with 19:06 left in the first half and then regained the lead at 4:41 on Tony Stockman's 3-pointer to give the Buckeyes a 57-54 lead, which they would not relinquish. The Buckeyes trailed for 34:25 during that span.
Geary Claxton posted his second double-double of the season. The freshman forward matched a career-high with 20 points, while also grabbing a career-high 13 rebounds. He had 14 points and 12 rebounds against the Buckeyes on 2/12/05. Claxton's double-double is the fourth by a Nittany Lion in a BTT game.
Ohio State drained a school BTT game record 11 triples (11-18) vs. Penn State. The previous high was nine vs. Iowa in the 2002 BTT. The Buckeyes also attempted a school BTT game record 31 treys. Ohio State's previous high was 26 set vs. Penn State in the 2000 BTT. That total also matched the BTT record for 3-pointers attempted in a single game - Minnesota launched 31 triples vs. Purdue in 2001.
Ohio State's Tony Stockman finished with 25 points (10-20 FG, 4-11 3-PT FG, 1-3 FT), one point from equaling a season high. He also registered four steals, four rebounds and three assists.
Penn State's Travis Parker netted a career-high 21 points (6-10 FG, 2-3 3-PT FG, 7-8 FT). His previous best was 19 points vs. Michigan on 1/15/05.
Ohio State won only its second game when trailing at halftime (2-7). The Buckeyes were victorious despite being out-scored 17-3 in second chance points.
