Ohio State: Ohio State continues its winning streak into the Big Ten Tournament; this is the Buckeyes sixth-straight win. Ohio State holds a 21-13 advantage vs. Penn State in its series history. OSU has won seven-consecutive meetings against Penn State. Ohio State won all three games this year, taking a 104-69 victory in Columbus on 1/21/06. At State College, OSU won 75-64. This win brings the Buckeyes' overall record to 24-4. The Buckeyes come into the Big Ten Tournament as the #1 seed for the second time and among the top three seeds for the fifth time in program history since 1998. The Buckeyes are 10-1 in the last 11 games played. Ohio State had 18 assists on 22 of its field goals. Senior center Terence Dials made his seventh appearance in the Big Ten Tournament and recorded his seventh double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. This upped his career scoring total to 1,505 points which moved him to 14th on Ohio State's career list. As a nationally ranked team, the Buckeyes hold a 7-2 record over the Nittany Lions. OSU boosted its record to 4-2 when trailing at the half. Ron Lewis made his first appearance in the Big Ten Tournament and was the leading scorer with 17 points. OSU's record in Big Ten Tournament games at Conseco Fieldhouse is now 4-1.
PSU's record in Big Ten Tournament action is now 5-9, including a 2-1 mark in quarterfinal games. In the 2000 BTT quarters, #9 PSU defeated the top-seeded Buckeyes, 71-66. The Nittany Lions are now 1-2 vs. OSU in Big Ten Tournament games. For the season, PSU was 0-3 against the Buckeyes. PSU's record in BTT games at Conseco Fieldhouse is now 1-3. Columbus, Ohio native Jamelle Cornley enjoyed success vs. the hometown Buckeyes during the 2006 season, including today's performance (18 pts, 8 rebs, 9-14 FG shooting). In the two previous games between PSU and OSU, Cornley had 20 points (10-16 shooting) and six rebounds in PSU's loss at Ohio State, then had 14 points (5-12 shooting) and eight rebounds in the Lions' loss at State College.
Geary Claxton continued to shine in Big Ten Tournament play. Including his 12 points and 12 rebounds against Ohio State this afternoon, Claxton's three-game career BTT stats show him averaging 16.3 points and 11.7 rebounds per contest. Today marked Claxton's seventh double-double of 2005-06. PSU's six turnovers were just two more than the Big Ten Tournament single-game record of four (by Wisconsin vs. MSU, 3/11/00). PSU's Ben Luber ended with a game-high and season-best nine assists, just two fewer than his career best effort of 11 (on two different occasions).
